Tragic: Geraldine Atkinson died on holiday in Iceland

Death riddle of promising doctor

A promising young doctor was found dead in her bed on holiday in Iceland in a tragedy that has baffled medical experts.

The body of Dr Geraldine Atkinson, 24, of Primrose Hill, was discovered by her friends on a group holiday in Reykjavik.

The former University College London student is not thought to have been drinking heavily, and not thought to have committed suicide.

Results from further toxicology tests and police reports from Iceland could take up to four months.

Opening an inquest at St Pancras coroner's court, Dr Andrew Reid said: "Geraldine was on holiday in Iceland and was found deceased in her bed on 7 February by her room-mates." An autopsy was unable to establish a cause of death, and further tests may be carried out, he said.

Dr Atkinson had attended Henrietta Barnett School for girls in Hampstead.

A spokeswoman said: "All those who knew Geraldine are shocked and saddened by her sudden death."
