Families' fears as Dhaka mutiny is quashed

Anxious relatives gathered in central Dhaka today to look for their loved ones as police retrieved bodies after a two-day mutiny by border guards left at least 22 people dead.

The insurrection ended after tanks rolled through the Bangladeshi capital in a show of force yesterday, preventing the revolt spreading across the impoverished and often unstable south Asian country.

But many families - particularly those of senior officers - did not know what happened to their relatives.

"Let me talk to my father. Where is my father?" cried 10-year-old Mohammad Rakib, standing with his mother outside the devastated border agency headquarters looking for his father, Captain Mohammad Shamim.

Nearly 2,000 guards opened fire on their officers and seized their headquarters on Wednesday in protest at poor pay and conditions.

Many senior officers of Bangladesh Rifles, the country's border force, were among the 22 bodies found. Fire official Dilip Kumar Ghosh said at least 65 more were missing.

Mr Ghosh said two bodies were found at the home of the border force's chief, Major General Shakil Ahmed. Authorities would not comment on his whereabouts but one officer said he saw him killed.
