Mosley: Sympathy for my father

Motorsport boss Max Mosley stunned MPs today by revealing that he had "sympathy" for his fascist father.

But in evidence to the Commons Culture, Media and Sport Committee, Mr Mosley insisted he did not agree with Sir Oswald Mosley's far-Right politics.

Mr Mosley, 68, president of motorsport governing body the FIA, called for a new privacy law to curb the excesses of the tabloids. He was awarded a record £60,000 damages against the News of the World last year over its claims that he took part in a "sick Nazi orgy".

He said the newspaper tried to use his father's role in the British Union of Fascists to paint him as a Nazi. "[They said] your father was married in [Nazi propagandist] Goebbels's house. I wasn't there. It's not my fault," he said.

Mr Mosley said he did not want to "overdo" his action because that would repeat his father's mistake. "He overdid it and it stopped people thinking seriously about his ideas," he said. "You always have sympathy with your parents. It doesn't mean I agree with it."
