Labour faces local polls defeat

Nicholas Cecil
11 Mar 2009

Labour MPs are braced for heavy losses in the summer local elections which would further weaken Gordon Brown's grip on power.

Polls today put Labour on 29 per cent, the Conservatives on 43 and the Liberal Democrats on 17. Labour fell below 30 per cent for the first time since September, which suggests David Cameron could get into Downing Street with a Commons majority of 92.

Labour's slide in popularity has coincided with the recession deepening and experts say Mr Brown will need an upturn in economic fortunes to win a general election in spring 2010.

Aides to Commons Leader Harriet Harman today denied a report that she and local government minister John Healey were downbeat about June's local polls at a meeting of the Parliamentary Labour Party.

MPs were reportedly told that Labour could lose control of its four county councils.

I think the only person who can save Labour is Frank Field. He talks a lot of sense. What do you think?

will the tories under call me dave be any better?i dont think so.do labour fear defeat and exile into opposition?no because they know its only a matter of time before cameron messes it up just as majior did in the 90s.they realise that its a cycle with a 5 to 12 year orbit and their time will come again, only indavidual prime ministers and opposition leaders have any fear of loosing as they lose personal power, the body labour are already planing the election after next.the only way for real change is a ballot box revolution where we the people vote for anyone who is not part of the 3 main established parties.personaly ill vote for the first indipendant on my ballot paper.

A nation of sheep will beget a Government of wolves. I wonder what the Tories really have in mind for us. The poll tax was not mentioned before it was introduced.

Sylvia, Epping Essex,i agree with you.i dont know how many times ive asked our local tory party"what are your policies"total mumbo jumbo replys. A possible 14 months to go and nothing. i feel it will be more of the same .closer to europe, snouts in the trough,EU army navy etc, more poverty, manufacturing down even further.yes i sound negative. im 61 and i despair with all parties.putting it bluntly, neither has the guts to make this country, not great, but a decent place to work and live.

Can I thank the political correct Labour party for helping me to open my eyes and become a BNP voter.

Many of my friends and colleagues will not be voting for the 3 old gang parties at any upcoming election - and i bet you all don't need 3 guesses to choose which British Party we will all be voting for?? The Worm has turned, and there are going to be a lot of surprised and unemployed Linisters very shortly!

I don't think we should celebrate too soon. Tommy Blair and billy Brown have spent the last eleven years emaciating Local Government powers. They left London alone while Ken was in charge, but now they've started calling in planning applications- to spite Boris. Roll on the Revolution!!!

No Labour Government has left office with the economy in a better state than when it took power! FACT! Why do people always forget that simple fact ? All these people now what to do is throw your money at a problem and tax people to the max. Brown will go down in history as the man who left the country in the biggest mess. Only when the new Government takes over will the full extent of this pathetic Government be known, It will be a lot worse than people realise as Brown is a master at keeping debt from the books. Just like the banks he has gambled away our future for very little apart from keeping him and his sad, sorry party in power!

If Brown doesn't realise how hated he is he should resign and leave politics. Let him go and live in Glasgow East and see what 75 years of socialism has done up there and we don't want it immporte here.
The unintended consequences of trying to play god to the world is that you have ended up looking like a complete fool. Now go away.

I think everything that can be said about Gordon and his Labour washouts has been said. Now is the time to turn the page and start afresh as one of my school teachers used to say. We have fresh air and purpose in the young Cameron and his team who are just straining at the leash to be let at the job of not only saving our country from total financial ruin, but saving it from the stuntifying plethora of regulations to our very freedom. It is not good English but as Captain T Kirk would say; "To boldly go where no one has gone before." Do that and people will follow you.

Oh what a short memory you have Sylvia. I don't think it really matters what David Cameron stands for or what he promises, the fact is that the country has had enough of this Government and an election is needed to put it out of its misery.

Do you honestly and genuinely believe that we are in a better position now than we were in 1997 when this shower came to power?

What is the point of local elections when so many of the brain dead insist on using them as a referendum on the national government.

Has anyone got a crowbar? That's the only thing that will weaken Gordon Brown's grip on power.

David Cameron is only ahead in the polls because people loath this governent and everything it stands for, not because they think he's the answer. He isn't. He's a PR man, and he'll do anything it takes to get votes. There is nothing he can do about immigration, he wants to just swap as many of our people leaving, with the same amount of third world econimic migrants coming in. This means our country will keep changing for the worse. He won't pull out of Europe, which means this country will continue to pay billions to have them make decisions that are detrimental to our way of life. He can't do anything, so it will be more of the same.

The recession deepening has not contibuted to Mr Brown poor ratings. It is the unelected man himself and his corrupt cronies in government who have caused their demise. I wait with glee to oust them from government and hopefully some of them can be investigated and prosecuted in the future.

I guess it is now very clear to everyone what a big hole Crash Gordon has created. A lot of families will have no breadwinner except for the state handouts, the ones with work will pay more and more tax. Of course Nu Labor will not be in power because they HAVE to call an election next year!

How will the Euro elections go on 4th June? Will the anti EU parties do well in what will probably be an incredibly low turnout? Certainly Labour I suspect are on a hiding on these important elections.
