Black police chiefs call Met truce

Leading black and ethnic minority officers at the Met are ready to reopen relations with the force's top brass months after an acrimonious rift.

The Metropolitan Black Police Association fell out with Scotland Yard bosses in October.

It called for a boycott of recruitment drives aimed at black and Asian applicants, claiming not enough was being done to tackle racism.

Alfred John, chairman of the MBPA, said he and colleagues were happy to meet members of Commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson's new administration.

But he said the boycott would remain until a "measurable plan" could be drawn up to show how their concerns were being addressed.

He said: "It is important that we lend our expertise to the organisation to continue its modernisation process."

The decision comes as the body that holds the force to account, the Metr opolitan Police Authority, continues its review of race relations in the force.

I find it strange that the chairman of this racist cabal isn't even a police officer. They have shown themselves to be an irrelevant self-aggrandising pressure group.

When I first read this, my immediate thought was that the BPA was getting worried. As they had sidelined themselves and everything was getting on nicely (apart from the odd Belgravia Headline) without them, they might soon start to have problems justifying their existence hence this very kind offer of 'expertise'. How 'transparant' of them.
