José Mourinho accused of punch to fan after defeat at Man United

Police are today investigating claims that Inter Milan manager José Mourinho punched a fan after his team's defeat against Manchester United last night.

The former Chelsea manager allegedly punched the supporter in the face after he made a comment to him as he left Old Trafford.

The fan is alleged to have chanted, "You're going home, you're going home."

Mourinho was walking to the Inter Milan team bus following the side's 2-0 Champions League defeat.

Greater Manchester Police said they were investigating an allegation of common assault outside the ground at around 11.55pm.

The victim of the alleged attack is said to be a supporter from the south of England.

A police spokesman said today officers were viewing CCTV to establish what happened.

Mourinho, 46, and his team had left on a plane for Italy by the time the allegation was made.

Earlier the Portuguese coach, who had previously lost just once in 13 matches against United with FC Porto and Chelsea, responded to hostile questions by Italian journalists.

"No one should be negative about my team's display," Mourinho said. "If anyone wants to criticise my team they will have to fight with me. We played a great game."

Greater Manchester Police issued a statement saying: "At 11.55pm a man reported he had been punched in the face on Sir Matt Busby Way, outside Old Trafford. Police are investigating a report of common assault. Inquiries are continuing."

An Inter Milan spokesman said: "As far as we are concerned nothing happened. The coach was surrounded by several hundred people and José was simply making his way back to it.

"We are aware of this allegation as it is being reported in the Italian media but as far as we are concerned nothing happened and there is no truth in it at all."

A spokesman for Manchester United said the club was aware of the allegation but made no further comment.

Do I think he could have done it after being in-your-face taunted by an MUFC fan?
Oh yeah!
Do I think there's any likelihood of the guy that was "assaulted" had any involvement in such taunts?
Is the Pope catholic?
There's no such thing as one sided stories.
....and I'm a long time loyal MUFC fan....
