Ice in jet 'caused Heathrow crash'

A build-up of ice in an engine component may have caused the British Airways Boeing 777 crash-landing at Heathrow airport, an accident report said today.

In a second interim report into the accident on 17 January last year the Air Accidents Investigation Branch said use of a particular anti-icing fuel additive "has many drawbacks".

It has now asked aviation regulators to look at solutions to this type of ice, which it calls "a major scientific challenge".
