Meredith suspect gets damages
Evening Standard16 Mar 2009
A BARMAN jailed on suspicion of murdering Meredith Kercher after being framed by Amanda Knox was today awarded £7,340 damages in Italy.
Diya "Patrick" Lumumba, 38, was arrested after Knox, 21, told police he had killed Meredith and she had "covered her ears to cover up her screams".
He asked for £462,000 damages. Today his lawyer Carlo Pacelli said the figure awarded was "unjust" and he would appeal.

Idle curiosity - why do taxpayers in any country have to compensate people for hurt feelings brought on by the direct action of wrong-doers? After all, the taxpayers are guilty of nothing more than being available as a reliable cash fountain. I'm not exactly ancient yet, but I can remember when people just got on with their lives when they tripped over reality on the way through their everyday existence.
Looks like the next mass-extinction is going to be mankind itself - when the benefits outstrip the taxes there will be people who can't cope with having to actually do something on their own behalf (other than signing claims forms).
