Livingstone: I oppose parental choice of school

18.03.09

KEN LIVINGSTONE talked for the first time about his son Tom's education at his local state primary in Brent.

The former mayor said that he was "not in favour of any parental choice in education".

He said: "You will go to your local school. Tom's in his first year at school. In his class there are only three kids who were born in this country, and one of them is called Mohammed.

"He's doing fine because he has parents who read to him and he lives in a house full of books. The illusion of educational choice has been a disaster for most kids and most parents."

This sounds a truly bizarre situation, and must put his son at a disadvantage. Not all parents have the 'wherewithall' to 'Home Educate' their children.
Just makes me glad I returned to Scotland nearly forty years ago or my son and daughter may never have been able to attain university degrees!

We used to do our schoolwork at school and go out to play after school. Now the parents are expected to do the work that the teachers are not doing.
