Today's James Naughtie says Gordon Brown 'is desperate'
Nicholas Cecil, Chief Political Correspondent26.03.09
GORDON BROWN is in a desperate political situation at home and has gone abroad as he wants to be seen to be taken seriously, a leading BBC broadcaster claimed.
The Prime Minister was due in Brazil today on part of a 17,500-mile global tour which includes New York, Strasbourg and Chile.
In Brazil he is due to meet President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva as well as football legend Pele.
"His strategy seems to be to pop up here, there and everywhere, looking like he's in charge," James Naughtie, a presenter on BBC Radio 4's Today Programme, told the Washington Post.
He added: "He's in a desperate political situation, so all the recognition, stature and weight is something that might offer him some political assistance.
"It's much easier for him to appear to be a man in charge on the international scene than it is at home.
"He wants to be seen to be taken seriously."

Your becoming embarressing.

Gordon McRuin is 'Yestdays Man'.
At least when Tony Blair was waffling away, we knew he was telling 'porkies', and he knew that we knew! (I think, allegedly)
McRuin still beleives in himself, which is good for him, but bad for Labour, and definateley bad for the rest of us Earthlings.
A leadership challenge if the May local elections go badly, and the June EU elections as well? Or will they all be posponed because Brown will 'bottle it' again.
Who is for an Autumn leadership challenge that leads to an early election? After all, even the most diehard Labour supporters must be questioning McRuin's sanity.

Note the clip of Brown in the middle of MEP Hannah's excellent speech. He has a lunatic grin on his face and is obviously in a world of his own. It is time for the men in the white coats.

I just wish I good run away abroad every time things get tough for me here. Then again, I would hardly ever be here, and I don't have the taxpayer picking up all my bills for these foreign jaunts.

The only problem is he doesn't stay abroad but keeps coming back and causing more problems than he's solving.

Brown always clears off when things get unpleasant. He did it whenever Blair did something stupid or ridiculous. When he declared war on Iraq Brown cleared off to South Africa. He is a useless, spineless coward and cannot face the fact that the British want him out, out out!

join the club, there's nigh on 60 million other people in team uk that are desperate. the vast majority of us lead lives of quiet desperation.

Well if that's the view of Naughtie, whose views are pinker than a pink gin at sunset, we must surely be near to the Big End.
*fingers crossed*

The trouble is he will come back !
- Bernard Parke, GUILDFORD
An amazing comment from Naughtie, a Labour loyal and old Guardian hack. He'll be voting conservative next!

Well I,ve suspected that PMs find it easier to carry out an international role than try to repair a broken UK which is ungovernable and totally corrupt.
- Jack Sparrow, UK
Our presidents and other politicians have tried that same strategy also when under fire at home, ex. Nixon's visit to China--and it fools no one!Least of all the folks back home.

Would it not be possible for Gordon Brown to disappear from the 'world stage'until after the next election, to save this country from further unnecessary embarrassment. He is like a 'ham' actor not familiar with the role he is supposed to be playing, with, the other actors in the drama confused, as he is reading from a different script, each utterance becoming more embarrassing than the last! It is quite obvious that it is not only the UK electorate that holds him in total contempt! I do not object to him making a fool of himself in a cabinet meeting full of his peers where I have no doubt, comparatively, he shows true 'star quality' but, on the world stage, which reflects on the UK, that is totally unacceptable, and, humiliating for all of us!

I've no doubt it may well be the case, but how in future can Naughtie conduct political interviews from an objective "neutral" perspective (whomever he is interviewing) when such views and remarks of his are in the public domain?

If "Broon" wants to be taken seriously, then he should resign - and at least get recognition for acting in the best interests of the Country: at the moment, he is more likely to be held in contempt for bringing this Country to its knees.

All I'll say is watch the Daniel Hannan EU parliament speech with Gordon Brown present in the chamber on youtube. Someone has finally summed up what the nation thinks in a 3 minute masterpiece. This is a Churchillian speech to Gordon Brown's Neville Chamberlain moment. Tomorrow will look very different politically.

Mr Callaghan left the country for some international conference or other , held in sunnier climes during the industrial chaos of the 1979 freezing winter of discontent. He lost the spring general election of that year.
Watch this space!

Too much is being read into this. He is simply adopting the policy of Mr Blair - when the situation is desperate and you have nothing valid to say - go travelling and leave your colleagues behind to make fools of themselves in parliament.

Desperate ? For goodness sake this man is so desperate to stay in power that he has bankrupted the whole country and yet he still wants us to spend. I pity the next government whoever it is because they will have to put all of this right.

Naughtie pretty much sums it up. I think even Brown's supporters would agree that he's backed himself into a very difficult position regarding mis management of the country's finances and his only way out is to repeat the mantra of "we're all in this together" and "greedy bankers are at the root of all this". Truth is that the UK is 'in it' worse than every other nation in the West because of Labour's socialist tax and spend policies of the past 10 years and yes whilst bankers have been part of the problem, they are not the cause. Unfortunately less informed members of the general public are falling for the 'greedy bankers' line - witness the ridiculous comments on these boards yesterday that justified/explained the criminal acts committed on Goodwin's home. Are the same people suggesting we stone the windows of every homeowner who took out a 125% mortgage or took a loan they knew they couldnt afford to repay?
- Dc, London
Perhaps a view of the MEP Daniel Hannah responding to brown in Strasbourg has prompted this?
- Danny, Manchester
It's not really working, is it.
Please resign, Gordon, if you care about this country.
