Madonna signs for adoption but court orders her to wait

MADONNA was told today she must wait until Friday to find out whether her bid to adopt a second Malawian child has been successful.
The singer, 50, signed papers today at a court hearing in the capital Lilongwe over plans to adopt four-year-old Mercy James but then the hearing was adjourned.
If the court approves, Mercy will be Madonna's second child from the African nation after three-year-old David Banda whom she adopted last year.
The pop star spent an hour and 10 minutes in court where she answered questions from High Court judge Mrs Justice Chomba and a government child welfare officer. She arrived at court in a convoy of four black SUVs protected by eight security guards.
However, Madonna has faced a backlash over the adoption in Malawi. Mercy's grandmother Lucy Chekechiwa, 61, said: "It is stealing. I won't let her go."
She said it had been agreed the child would go to Madonna when she turned six and no earlier.
Mercy's father is believed to be alive but no other details have emerged from welfare officials and people close to the case say the girl's relatives have now agreed to the adoption.
Children's campaigners have accused Madonna of using her wealth to skirt Malawian law which requires an 18 to 24-month assessment period before adoption.
Charity Save the Children said the star, recently divorced from Guy Ritchie, risked sending the wrong message. "International adoption can actually exacerbate the problem it hopes to solve," spokesman Dominic Nutt said.
"The very existence of orphanages encourages poor parents to abandon children in the hope that they will have a better life."
He was supported by Mavuto Bamusi, national director for the Human Rights Consultative Committee, who is considering a challenge to the adoption. But some legal experts played down concerns that Madonna has violated any laws.
Austin Msowoya, legal researcher with Malawi's Law Commission, said the best interests of the child would be taken into account.
Madonna landed in Lilongwe in her private jet yesterday with her three children David, Rocco, eight, and Lourdes, 12.
Madonna and her entourage are staying at the Kimbali Country Lodge situated in forests with views over the Nkhoma Mountain.
The biological father of David, Yohane Banda, has spent the last 24 hours with his son at the heavily-guarded lodge and is expected to stay there until tomorrow.
A source said he was "very happy" and "delighted" with the way his son is being brought up by the singer.

She is adopting this second child for all the wrong reasons it seems. You surely don't go for a second adoption just because your son NEEDS a sister. She would never pass the homestudy requirements in Canada I'm sure. Her actions are hurting families that have followed all the proper requirements, homestudy, education components, etc. It is surely not an easy task to adopt internationally and it is not a decision we take likely. The ups and downs are absolutely heartwrenching and heartbreaking as we wait and wait and wait. I'm sorry, but Madonna loses my all respect on this one.

if she was really serious about helping people she could join an aid agency, then go to africa, roll her sleeves up and get stuck in! really all she wants to help is her own bank balance with the currency of publicity, she did it by wearing fur after she had previously described it as disgusting and now she is using poor black children for the same selfish ends, lets face it madge you were washed up a long time ago, do something positive for humans and animals or butt out

Errrm.....
Isn't this exactly what Angelina Jolie has been doing for years to build her family?? I honestly don't understand why there is so much fuss about Madonna wanting to give an orphaned child a home and loving family. At least being financially secure cuts out a lot of the bureaucracy and red tape that comes with adoption thus enabling the child to be placed with it's adoptive family within a more acceptable timeframe.
If it is good enough for Angelina, then it is good enough for Madonna.
As for all the doubting Thomas's on here who have nothing better to do than play the devil's advocate, leave the poor woman alone, she is not doing anything wrong!!

She could have adopted many families in Africa and helped them out of poverty. What she is doing is buying children because she can. It isn't even as if she looks after them. She farms them out to nannies. As the little boy was adopted jointly by her and her ex-husband, i think this is just a way of saying to him: This is 'my' child, nothing to do with you. I don't understand why the Malawi government let her do this.

What is wrong with these people? Maddona is not my favourite person but what she is doing for this child is outstanding. I lived In Africa and even in South Africa children that don't have families and left in orphanages have little hope of a decent life. If that Grandmother who suddenly popped out the woodwork was really concerned why is that child in an orphanage? The reason is usually because all her children deposit their unwanted with her and she has many to look after. The life expectancy in Africa is down in the 40's. The death rate amongst children is very high.
Maddona with her wealth can only improve the child's lot and future prospects plus the child hopefully will be able to help others in Africa when an adult. Remember the GDP of the whole of africa, which is a huge continent amounts to about 1% of the GDP of the planet or less. Poverty is endemic plus they have the worst rulers in the world. For those who have an idealist view of africa I invite them to go and live amongst those people. They are really nice people but live in terrible circumstances due to the corruption something we have to watch here.

If Maddona is serious about helping orphans, why can't she use some of her megabucks to sponsor a children's home in Africa? -Where she can visit as regularly as she likes, and support the children in their natural environment,- near to their own kin. -Anything otherwise leads me question her motives.

She is not in a stable mariage and cannot offer any child the future it needs having two parents. She seems to think that she can buy her way in Africa and she should be stopped at once infact why didn't they turn her away at the airport. and send her back .

Whatever Madonna does she will be wrong in the eyes of too many people. My own view is that rather than trying to adopt one unfortunate child she could do so much more, like open a school and offer educaqtion for many more such unfortunate children. I wonder how her adopted children will deal in the future with the legacy of their super star mum? Anyway, at least she is doing SOMETHING.

Madonna does not exhibit the character of someone who will be able to pass on values of which a child needs to become a person of worth. Money and fame do not make a person.

Maybe she should find a proper orphan as opposed to stealing a child from the arms of its existing family. Maybe she didn't like the look of the proper ones - not cute enough. This womens selfishness is disguisting

Rather than us learning about humanity, people like Malebane from Lesotho should learn more about birth and population control. Then there would be fewer problems from overpopulation and a better future for everyone. The really disgusting thing is that so many people have children in the knowlegdge that they are completely incapable of looking after them.

It seems bizarre to allow her to adopt again. This poor child is going to be taken out of everything she knows into a world where a nanny will raise her whilst mummy does her yoga / goes on tour / shags a 22 year old. How on earth can this be allowed. She wouldn't be allowed to adopt in the US or UK for these reasons. It would be better if she waited until she at least isn't touring any more and has all her time to devote.

It is disgusting that people think it is wrong to adopt when the world is faced with so many problems and at least the children get the chance at a better future something that we greatly appreciate in these parts of the world.before you judge be grateful for what you have it might not be there tomorrow, you people should learn more about ubuntu(humanity)

We put these people up on pedestals and are surprised by their selfish ego driven actions. Buying children from Africa is not the solution and I hope that someone puts a stop to this celebrity child trafficking. Children especially orphans from war torn countries, are not fashion accessories. It seems that our Madge has a thing for little African kids.... she probably thinks it gives her a bit more street cred.

It amazes me that so many people think that they know what is going on in Madonna's mind and what her intentions are. Maybe she just genuinely wants to give a poor child a chance. People should just let her be and mind their own lives I am sure they are not perfect.

Ah, but do ALL generous contributions get through to those that need it?

Just a material girl..

It's amazing how rich people like Bill Gates take millions to Africa to improve the lives of children there without much to-do, but a veinglorious popstar thinks she's doing a big favour if she whisks one kid away for the spurious reasons that (a) it's better to help one than none at all and (b) her chosen lifestyle is better for the kid than the one the rest of the children in Africa are getting. There's more to life than a Gucci handbag! Children can be surprisingly happy without MTV and a walk-in wardrobe!
Get real: give the money to the orphanage and stop cradle-snatching.

This is so wrong on all levels and the sad thing about it is she will get the child. What Madonna wants Madonna gets. Its not as though she spends that much time with the first little african she bought is it? Does she even really know about their culture; what will she tell the kids when they are older about their history? Does she know about moisturising black skin and about plaiting and greasing the little girl's hair? I thinking not! Personally I don't know why she just didn't go to a sperm bank for another kid.

It certainly conforms to the commonly held belief that once you've been there, you never go back.

Madonna's daughter looks so much like her when Madge was younger.

She should not be allowed to buy another child and bring it up in her crazy self-obsessed world. If she really wants to help, she could donate money for building schools, houses, water wells etc to the village. That way ALL the people benefit now and for future generations. She won't do that though. She's much too selfish and thoughtless.

i think its hilarious. Madonna really enjoyed her trip to Africa. she picked up some great bargains in the markets, brought back some duty free, oh!!!! and a baby....
