114 arrested over threat to power station are released

MORE than 100 people arrested for allegedly planning to target a power station have been freed on bail, police said today.

About 200 officers swooped on a school in Sneinton, Nottingham, yesterday. Police chiefs said the suspects posed "a serious threat" to the nearby Ratcliffe-On-Soar plant.

The 114 arrested were released after being interviewed, said a spokeswoman for the Nottinghamshire force.

She added: "Police have gathered a large amount of evidence which they are now reviewing. From information gathered, police believe those arrested were planning a period of prolonged disruption to the safe running of Ratcliffe-On-Soar power station."

Some of those arrested are said to have links to an action group behind a string of climate change protests.

Police confirmed some of the suspects were linked to a group that had protested at Kingsnorth power station in Kent, Heathrow Airport and Drax power station in North Yorkshire.

The Ratcliffe-on-Soar site is run by energy firm E.ON, which has been affected by several previous environmental protests. It was previously targeted by members of the Eastside Climate Action, although the group denied any involvement in the latest suspected plot.

A spokesman for Camp For Climate Action, which has protested at Drax, Kingsnorth, Heathrow and most recently at the G20 summit in London, refused to comment last night.

People living near Iona School in Sneinton described how 20 police vans and several cars swooped just after midnight yesterday.

Mark Hill, 44, said: "Police brought people out from the school and put them into the vans. I could hear the people singing as they were led away."
