London suffering from shocking rise in rare 'Victorian' diseases
Joe Murphy, Political Editor15.04.09
London is in the grip of a startling rise in diseases associated with Victorian times, figures disclose today.
Rare infectious illnesses including typhoid, whooping cough and scarlet fever have soared by 166 per cent in the past two years.
Infection rates in the capital are markedly higher than the national averages, warned Justine Greening, the shadow minister for London who assembled the figures.
They include a staggering 214 per cent increase in cases of mumps - up from 125 in 2007 to 393 last year. The disease is easily prevented with vaccine. The rise could be a result of parents shunning the MMR jab after now debunked claims in 2001 that it might be linked to autism. Mumps in adults can lead to hearing loss and damage the nervous system.
Whooping cough cases quadrupled in the five years to 2007, from 63 to 252. The disease is highly contagious, with infections often lasting months. Symptoms include choking spells and vomiting and can cause death, especially in young infants.
Cases of scarlet fever, which causes high fevers, rashes, and even severe damage to internal organs, are up 153 per cent since 2005, with 501 infected in London last year.
Typhoid, associated with poor sanitation and hygiene, has risen steadily since 2004, from 45 to 127 cases per year.
The Conservatives claimed the Government was partly to blame for failing to invest enough in public health and to appoint school nurses.
Ms Greening, the Putney MP, said: "The rise of these highly-infectious and potentially fatal diseases in our city is truly alarming.
"The Government must do more to ensure the public health of Londoners."

Would the influx of third-worlders have anything to do with it? And their reluctance to accept modern medicine?

Thanks to Liebour and 12yrs of uncontrolled mass
immigration! Just look at whats happening in
Zimbabawe...

We are having many of the same problems over here in the USA also. Illegals immigrants from Mexico come with their children who most of the time have never even been to see a doctor, much less have gotten any shots! We are seeing diseases that haven't been around since my father was a child in the 1920's!

Want to guarantee you suffer an illness or mild symptoms (if you've had innoculations)? - just take a plane to any destination you like. The longer the journey the higher the chance of your catching something else as well.
- Nora, London, UK
Doing proper health checks on immigrants would be a help. They manage to do them in Canada, Australia and the USA. Also, the isolation of illegals until properly checked would also reduce the spread of infection. The present system of letting every and any one loose to roam the streets of London must be a serious part of the cause. Maybe we can't say this because its racist and against someones Human Rights?

These diseases are carried by human to human - sometimes via food and drink -; and it is humans, rather than sanitary conditions, who have created this increase. As they are not hospitalised, humans who are treated often do not complete the treatment prefering to send medicines 'back home', thus helping ensure the health not of humans but of the viruses which are in effect given a vacine against succumbing to the medicines. As for poor sanitary conditions, these can be seen in many communities of varying financial well being and are thought to be a matter of 'culture' and thus deemed too sensitive a matter to discuss and action in case of offence. Presumably, it is better for the community to suffer the consequences rather than take rigorous preventive immigration, educational or medical action.

Actually, after twelve years of a Labour government, no-one in this country is in a position to lecture anyone else about third-world standards!

One major cause is the insanity of NHS prescription charges.
Many of these illnesses require treatment for up to a year to completely eradicate them. Hoever, you'll be given one or two months' worth of drugs, and then be expected to pay another charge for the next two months. A poor and ill-informed person will at that time feel better, so he'll stop taking the medicine to save his money. The illness will then return, often in a drug-resistant form, and other people will be infected.
For public health reasons, all prescriptions to treat serious infectious diseases should be both free and compulsory. Anyone not taking his medicine should be detained in a secure sanitorium until treatment has succeeded (or until it fails and he dies). It was detaining disease carriers that largely eradicated these illnesses before modern drugs existed.
Infectious disease carriers who are not UK citizens should be deported. We should not be subsidizing the non-emergency treatment of non-citizens, and their presence in the UK is a public-health danger to UK citizens every bit as great as a known armed criminal with a murder conviction.

The same thing is happening in my country. And teachers at my sons' school ask parents to check their childrens' heads for lice every year!
- Cath, Europe (the Med)
Well we went to these 3rd world countries after the Victorian times, gave these diseases to them now the are coming over here to give these diseases to us.It is "pay back" time,it is amazing how nature works.

Thanks Labour - Look what you have let in now through your open door policy for immigrants.
You just keep screwing up dont you.
Bring on the election.

Why on earth is anyone surprised at this 'revelation' ? The unchecked daily influx of migrants into London can only increase the spread of these diseases, the majority of which had been either virtually or totally eradicated from our once beautiful city/ country where as little as 40 years ago, a murder made front page news but now barely merits a few column inches. We have been sold down the river by successive administrations but after 12 years of this shower would the last decent British person to leave please turn off the lights......

any traveller who has witnessed the early morning Heathrow inbounds from any 3rd world destination - Africa, India, Pakistan etc, cannot fail to notice the hacking coughs and general poor physical condition of many of the passengers! I am certain that at the bare minimum, TB screening should be mandatory before clearance to fly is given - we are just importing disease daily at the moment!

Third World immigrants bring Third World diseases and standards.
- Fred, Horsham
This is 100% an immigration issue - poeple uneducated about these diseases arriving here and then not seeking either treatment of prevention jabs! This is a huge worry and a disgrace in this day and age that we are having these problems in London.
- Nick, london
Don't forget tuberculosis, which is still rampant in many parts of the world. It killed millions of Victorians, and is now returning - thanks to inadequate health checks on emigrants to the U.K.
- Phil Jones, London UK
Its easy to blame MMR refuseniks for the increase in Mumps, but many of the cases are in older children who have been previouly vaccinated. The same is true of Whooping cough. There have been outbreaks in the USA even though Most children are vaccinated. Why not just admit that vaccines are not as effective as prevously thoughy. Diseases are cyclical and viruses mutate anyway.
- Mary, London
What do you expect with the incredible rise in immigration from second and third class societies?
- Frank, Home Counties, England.
This is again symptomatic of the government's failure to control immigration. TB is the biggest worry - some strains are now so resistant to antibiotics that they're incurable. We have to be much more careful about who we let into this country. The cost to the NHS, and therefore, the taxpayer can be enormous.
- Richard, Welling
Can we have a campaign to stop people spitting in the street. It must be the most unhygienic disgusting things to do and I see it more and more. Eating and putting on make up on the tube is a close runner up. I cannot understand why anyone thinks the tube is a healthy environment to eat in and as most tube journeys are under an hour, I find it totally unnecessary.
- Patricia, LONDON
Hardly a surprise given the lack of health screenings for people entering the UK, and the Govt allowing the inner cities to become so heavily over-populated.
Just waiting for Gord to announce 'an inquiry' into this, which no doubt clears Labour of all blame.
- Scott, London
Quite frankly, I'm not surprised. The country is filthy dirty. Rubbish is picked up infrequently, hospitals are filthy, the NHS is a complete shambles, too many stupid rules and regulations. Carry on!! Soon the whole country will have to be quanrantined!

I had scarlet fever, whooping cough and mumps as a child in the 50's and managed to survive!
