Officer who beat me was a thug out for blood says protester
Peter Dominiczak17 Apr 2009
A WOMAN who claims she was beaten by a baton-wielding police officer who concealed his number at the G20 protests today described him as a "thug out for blood".
Nicola Fisher, 35, was badly bruised in the alleged assault outside the Bank of England on 2 April, which was filmed and posted on YouTube.
The former drug addict has now sold her story to a newspaper, reportedly for £50,000 after hiring publicist Max Clifford. She is also believed to be planning a substantial compensation claim.
The sergeant, from the Met's Territorial Support Group, had concealed his identity number on his epaulettes. He has since been suspended.
Ms Fisher's claims came as new pictures emerged of 47-year-old Ian Tomlinson, who died of a heart attack during protests a day earlier.
The photographs, taken about 15 minutes before his death, appear to confirm claims that Mr Tomlinson had been involved in an altercation with police before the "shove" that is believed to have caused his death. It is also alleged that he was nudged by a police van after he refused to move for police officers.
Ms Fisher made her claims today in the Daily Express. The activist, who works at an animal sanctuary in East Sussex, was at a vigil in the City for Mr Tomlinson when she was hit by the officer.
She said: "The policeman is a thug with a weapon which he is legally allowed to use. He can do what he wants.
"I was weeping and in the most dreadful pain. I looked like I had been whipped by the Taliban. I had a bruise measuring seven inches by four across the back of my thigh. And I had another purple four-inch bruise across the back of my calf."
Ms Fisher describes herself as "a tree-hugger" with a passion for animal welfare and the environment. She said she had travelled to London from Brighton with her boyfriend Gavin Shepherd, 30, on the second day of the protest.
She denied that she had been shouting and swearing at the sergeant just before the incident. She said: "I put my hands up to stop him pushing against me and the next minute I thought he had punched me in the face. But in fact he had backhanded me across my left cheek.
"It was very painful and I screamed, 'How can you hit a woman in the face?'
"The policeman was very aggressive. His eyes were bulging and he was clearly looking for a fight. The next moment he lashed out at me with his baton, hitting me across the back of my left thigh. At the same time he again brought his truncheon crashing down on my calf."
Ms Fisher said she now has problems sleeping. She said: "The cop was a thug out for blood. He was a thug with a weapon."
The Independent Police Complaints Commission has now received 145 complaints after the clashes between police and protesters at the G20 summit.

I have read the article and than read all the comments and I started to form my opinion about Miss Nicola Fisher as a typical 'Sheakespearian' shrew who attacked a policeman with force and the policemen had to defend himself and now she is even being paid a hefty compensation for that.
Than I watched it on youtube and am now quite amazed by the sheer misogyny in 90% of the comments. The woman is indeed a petite 5foot , fragile looking girl. I refuse to see any justice of what she had to go through. As she had rightly put it herself, the policeman could have easily just move her instead of inflicting her with such violence.
Slapping a petite woman or any woman on a face is a disgrace, no matter what the circumstances.
Why didn't the policeman took on a tall, muscular man instead?
Women it seems are the easy target, and policeman looked to me as if he has done it before.
IMO The police should be able to differentiate between men and women protesters, just as they should have been able to differentiate between a Brazilian and an Arab when the innocent man got killed. Mistakes happen but these mistakes are simply preposterous.
Most comments are obviously filled with jealousy of the compensation. Some men sound to me as if they found an outlet for their frustrations on a fragile looking woman protester. It's been clinically proven that violence towards women is an expression of impotence. I am very surprised to find also a few women amongst the misogynists below.

The “she got what she was asking for” comments on here are disgraceful; I suspect they show a worrying insight to the poster’s attitude towards casual violence towards women more than anything else. I support the police, and for that reason we need police that are accountable and that the public can trust, not thugs that cover up their ID’s and use excessive violence. It seems some people here are happy to condone police brutality, but only in circumstances were they don’t like the person it is directed towards. I’m sure if they are ever on the receiving end of an injustice by the police they would be the first to bleat about it!

Alex Pomeroy - I too think the officer who slapped Miss Fisher should be named: so the decent people among us can send him flowers and messages of support. Well done for showing such restraint that man, I say! I am heartened to see that most of the people offering their views here are of a similar mindset to me on this. Those who are making constant referals to the officer's epaulettes not bearing his ID numbers have failed to realise that as a sergeant, in a public order situation, he wears grey epaulettes with his silver metal shoulder numbers mounted onto them. The grey is a quick way of identifying sergeants, and inspectors wear orange epaulettes with their pips on them - a simple and effective way of identiying decision-makers in, quite often, hectic situations. Any formal enquiry to the Public Order Training Centre would have revealed that this is established practice. Even the Commissioner should have known this.

'Remember this also; all police officers are under the same laws that we all are' - Mickyinlondon, london
Maybe, Mickyinlondon, someone should have told this deranged woman that she broke the law by hitting a policeman. She went to an anti-capitalist march looking for trouble, taunted and goaded a police officer and ended up getting exactly what she deserved. If you think Ms Fisher's behaviour was normal or decent you clearly have sympathies for the thug elements in our society. For someone who is an anti-capitalist she is happy to ask for a huge sum of money from a newspaper; double standards here I think, of course egged on by that other piece of slime Max Clifford. Faced with the dregs of society who are free to treat the law exactly as they please but who expect the police to exist wholly within the law my sympathies lie entirely with the police.

Remember this also; all police officers are under the same laws that we all are; they are not immune from their actions under the law; and as officers of the law; they should set good examples to the public in general; and not bad examples at any time; because a thug is a thug; in or out of any uniform.

There are always two sides to any argument; I think we all agree that good honest Policemen are very much respected; and just what this Nation needs as a basic standard; and not just a one off, or very rare group indeed etc.
The honest Policeman’s worst enemy is the bent and corrupted; or thuggish police officer; he tarnishes all the others with his or her actions etc.
We all need a police force; that is for sure; but we need a good honest police force; because a dishonest police force; is far worse, than no police force at all.
I have met both kinds of Police Officers in my long life; the good ones were well worth knowing, and became good friends over time; but the corrupt ones I have met; are worse than most criminals etc, and not worth spitting on etc.
I think the kind of Police Force we end up with, is down to the Government and the Police chiefs themselves in the main; but the honest cop can do a lot more; just by exposing those in their ranks that are corrupt; because they know who those corrupt officers are more than anyone else; but I do understand that in most cases; the honest cop has to work with the dishonest ones; so it is often Hobson’s choice etc.
As for the Officer back handing and coshing the ladies leg; even if she did swear; I wondered what that Officer would say if a big man in body armour; back handed and coshed in the legs, [thus avoiding visible bruises] his wife, daughter, mother, or grandmother etc; hardly the act of a real tough Cop.

But as several posters have pointed out, both she and, to a lesser extent Iam Tomlinson, appear not to have been as innocent in this whole episode as many would claim. It is sad that a man lost his life and a family lost their father - the policeman's actions seem highly questionable regardless of provocation - but in the case of this silly girl Miss Fisher, she did more than put herself in harm's way, the went looking for trouble and she only has herself to blame for what appeared to be an entirely reasonable, legal and controlled response from a police officer.
