G20 police ‘were too violent’
Evening Standard21.04.09
THE majority of the public believe the police were overly aggressive at the G20 protests, according to figures revealed today.
A poll shows 59 per cent of people feel officers used an unacceptable level of violence at the London demonstrations.
The statistics also reveal that less than a third, 31 per cent, agree that necessary force was used during the policing of the event.
The findings, released by market research company ICM, come as new videos emerged showing aggressive tactics at the protests.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission has received a record number of complaints about G20 policing, and is conducting three investigations into alleged attacks by officers.

I agree with J Nowland, Leeds.
And I have said it before; let the good cops turn in the bad cops; because they more than any other; know who the bad cops are.
If they do not; then the rotten apples; with surely turn the whole barrel, rotten.
I have met many real good cops in my time; sadly I have met some of the rotten ones as well; the real enemy of the good cop; has always been the evil ones amongst them.

Sir, I did not call the police murderers and may I remind you that the, " (likes of me ), are the very people who pay your wages. My main point is that the police must police themselves and tranparently so we can have faith in them.
Teachers don't like getting a volley of abuse but they do not reach for a baton and whack the offensive child in the face with it.
I am so glad you reminded us that even speeding is a criminal act. So I therefore take it that you agree that all police officers caught breaking the law must face prison. I say prison as opposed to a fine or disiplinary because they are in a privilaged position and to abuse it is unforgivable.
Root out this scum before the public loses all faith in you. I do appreciate the hard work of the many police officers in our country. Perhaps this is why it hurts me so much when I see all of that undone by the arrogant scum that go unpunished, impostering as officers of the law.
By weaking the police force through their actions they weaken our democracy. Thus they are 100 times more of a threat to our nation than any unwashed anarchist.
I suggest you and all other decent police officers go to work and actively report collegues who you know break the law. Clean up your act and do not ever resort again to covering up the actions of criminals.

Yes the Police should face up to their responsibilities but by your comments you are lumping every single police officer as a power hungary moron.
Why should I as a Policeman be called a murderer by the likes of you, no the police force is not perfect, no industry is perfect they all have elements and people who perhaps shouldnt be in their position. People talk about how Police should have more respect for the public how about the public have more respect for the police and the work they do, I dont appreciate getting a volley of verbal abuse from people who have broken the law, it is always 'why dont you catch real criminals' when they dont understand that they have even speeding is an offence. The majority of police are hard working and their efforts to police out country is being hampered by a mountain of paperwork which the public dont understand.

May I suggest that the police do their own work. All we ask for as their employers is that they do their job lawfully.
I have read ridiculous comments where people say that our police are not as bad as other forces in the world. Well I should bloody well hope so. This is BRITAIN not Zimbabwe. How dare people suggest that the only answer is to use rubber bullets and water cannon. The police must face up to their responsibilities and police this nation LAWFULLY. I have never yet in my entire life talked with a police officer who is willing to admit that the force is anything other than perfect. It sickens me. I like most people are not anti police but I do not give them carte blanche to break the law in my name and on my money.
If my son or daughter had been beaten or killed by an officer in London that day for no reason, I swear I would have hunted the criminal down like a pig and dealt out a punishment that can not be described.
When a society reaches the point where the greatest danger to it is from it's own police, that society has the right to take the law into it's own hands in order to protect itself.
If this is what the police want,(bearing in mind that they live in this country to ), then they are going the right way about it at about 100 miles per hour.
If they want our respect, help and money then they must stop covering up their own criminal behaviour and send criminal officers to prison. Not just a token sacrifice I mean all of them.

Commute to London for work everyday do you? Have a lot of contact with the Metropolitan police force?!
This society has become so apathetic and out of touch with reality it is unbelievable.

What an outrageous and disgusting comment you left.
I have two eyes as do most people. I saw the footage of a man with his back to the police walking away with his hands in his pockets. Whether he has a big mouth or not is irrelevant. He was then heavily pushed from behind and struck with a weapon. If I or anyone else had done that he would be arrested. The officer concerned is a criminal and may well go to prison for murder or manslaughter. What is more the officers who were with him failed to, help the victim, arrest the criminal who attacked him or arrest him for not wearing his numerals.
This behaviour is not just peculiar to demonstrations, it happens everyday all over Britain. Our police force has too much power and the police are drunk on it. They honestly believe that they are untouchable. So the next time a Bobby walking his beat hears passers-by shout, " murderers ", don't ask why. The answer is already known. How many police officers went to prison last year ?. What none. So police officers never commit crimes. They must be angels sent from heaven. It couldn't be because we have a corrupt police force and judiciary, could it.

Maybe the army should police these protests from now on, all these protesters cost alot in time and resources not just from the Met but also from neighbouring forces who are then short for their own areas

Overly aggressive? Funny, I don't recall the Police using water canon, CS gas or showering the crowd with rubber bullets. OK, all joking aside, I don't think it is acceptable for them to go round kicking people, but by the same measure, these demonstrators must realise that if you start smashing up buildings, screaming abuse and generally intimidating people, the police will respond. Likewise, they are human, and everyones adrenalin runs high in those situations. To a certain extent you get back the behaviour you dish out. And as for the guy who died - 1) It hasn't been proven yet that it was the fault of the Police, it could just have been his time to go, he was after all an obese, middle-aged man who, it has been widely reported, had a drink problem, and 2) Working in the area as I do I have encountered this individual selling his papers on a daily basis. He was well known for shouting sarcastic remarks at passers by (self included) so perhaps he was doing similar to the Police that day? In any case, he could certainly have taken a detour around the area where the protest was taking place that day to get back to Smithfield.

If Boris Johnson thinks the force is doing a good job I suggest respectfully that he gets out a bit more and takes a look for himself. Dye you hair Boris, get it cut and pop out on any Friday or Saturday night and discover a whole new world called reality. Then and only then dare to tell us your opinion of the good old British Bobby because then it just might agree with what the rest of us have come across all too often. My sister spotted a black kid being beat up by five brave white kids and turned her car around to come back. By then he had got away and escaped into a car that luckily reversed out of a nearby drive. Bottles were thrown windows were smashed and the little old man in the car was left a nervous wreck but the boy was ok. What did the police do when they turned up? Took a couple of statements and put it down to "one of those things" until they took my sister's name and suddenly discovered she was the wife of one of the city's top criminal lawyers then of course miraculously a whole new police force was seen, caring, sharing, trauma advice given, socila work department informed blah blah blah, ie what they are supposed to do in every case. Anonimity Boris, ..... you should try it before you next open your mouth.

Most of the scenarios shown are perfectly reasonable. As for the guy who died - there's no proven case yet that it was anything to do with being shoved after not moving away from the police when asked.

You could see it coming. I thought the Police did alright, bar matey that died. Try pulling these protests off in certain other countries & the situation would be far worse.
