A CHINESE opera created by 3,000 school children in Hackney is in the running for one of Britain's most prestigious classical music prizes.

Hackney Music Develop Trust has been nominated for an honour from the Royal Philharmonic Society.

Pupils from nine primary schools created the set and costumes for Confucius Says, and 300 sang with the performers at Hackney Empire last year. Their rivals in the education category include the Welsh National Opera. Project director Tertia Sefton-Green said: "We're incredibly excited."
