Treasury challenges IMF over bail-out bill

THE Treasury clashed with the International Monetary Fund over Britain's banking bail-out figures just as Alistair Darling was putting the finishing touches to his Budget.
Treasury officials were angered by an IMF claim that Britain faces a bill of £200billion for the bail-out - equal to 13.4 per cent of gross domestic product. The IMF figure contradicted Mr Darling's own prediction of a £60billion loss. Last night the Treasury demanded that the IMF pull the figures from its website.
The IMF later conceded that it may have made an error.
