Q&A - swine flu explained

What are the symptoms of flu?

A high temperature that comes on quickly, and general aches and pains. Sufferers may also experience a loss of appetite, nausea and a harsh dry cough.

I have symptoms, what should I do?

Experts say normal advice for flu applies - rest, drink plenty of fluids, and don't return to work until you are well again.

How long is it likely to last?

Symptoms will usually peak after two to three days and you should begin to feel much better within five to eight days.

Do masks provide protection?

Yes, but not for the person wearing them. They help stop the virus being expelled from the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.

How do anti-viral drugs work?

They target an enzyme that enables the virus to spread from cell to cell. Anti-viral drugs can shorten the illness and reduce its severity, provided they are taken within 48 hours of the onset of symptoms. Two anti-viral drugs have been licensed in Britain in the past decade: Tamiflu and Relenza.

Are there enough anti-viral drugs?

Yes. The Government says it has more than 30million courses of the drugs.
