Pilots to boycott trial of ID cards
Jack Lefley05.05.09
Airline pilots will refuse to take part in the national identity card scheme when trials begin at London City and Manchester airports this autumn.
The British Airline Pilots' Association will raise a legal challenge to Home Office plans to use "critical" airside workers to test the scheme.
The decision by Balpa, which represents more than 80 per cent of commercial pilots, is the latest blow to the project and follows former home secretary David Blunkett's suggestion that it should be repackaged as a biometric passport scheme.
MPs will shortly be asked to approve powers to force pilots and airside staff to register for ID cards as part of checks before they are employed. The scheme will try to persuade air staff to sign up by waiving the £30 registration fee.
Balpa has protested that the ID card scheme cannot be considered voluntary when workers will not be able to get an airport pass without one.

The argument for ID cards falls down - to help againts terrorism and crime. The focus should be on those individuals, not 99% of the innocent nation (who will probably eventually be required to have ID cards through driving licence/passport expiry as a voluntary scheme is only the start). And for those who say that the innocent should'nt have anything to worry about ID cards if they have have nothing to hide should bear in mind it is exactly because of our innocence and freedom to anonymity that give us the right to stay that way. innocent people in the UK should not need to prove themselves - the focus should be on those who have no right to be here to prove themslves.

ID cards are a useless and enormous waste of money, the reason Jaqui 'box room' Smith is ploughing on with this ridiculous farce is political, her master and protector 'Brown the incompetent' cannot afford to be seen to back down again this week, it would once again undermine the fool's 'authority' over the rabble he professes to lead. The whole idea of going to the post office or a pharmacy to be finger printed and photographed like a criminal and then paying £60 for it is insane. Only a deluded idiot like Jaqui Smith or complete out of touch loon like Brown could possibly think up such a stupid and cynical waste of everybody's time and money. ID card's are simply of no use or benefit to the majority of people in this country, they won't stop terrorism or fraud, illegals are not going be affected as they can stay here as long as they want anyway under Smith's fiasco of an immigration policy. The whole thing is a disgusting waste of money when the country is facing massive debt. This surely is the final nail in the coffin for Labour, they will be forever seen as the party who finally took away a thousand years of hard earned and hard won liberty. Any Labour MP stupid enough to back this will pay the cost at the next election, get the message the British public don't like, don't want and don't need ID cards. We need better hospitals, better education and better job creation. We also need a better government, one who actually listens to us. End this lunacy now!

Relax everyone; today’s news will save the tax payers a fortune on ID cards; we can buy our own for £60 each.
That will save the tax payers, paying anything.
It's called creative accounting.

Well done BALPA !
This should be the start of massive civil disobedience to our Corrupt Labour Government.
Tell them to stick their ID Cards where the 'sun don't shine'.

The ID card scheme has nothing to do with "terrorism" - that hobgoblin the government and media want us all to believe in. It is about social control and the cultivation of the belief that we are owned by the state and that the state has a prior claim on our loyalty. Since the state is in fact a satanic cabal, we may ignore it with no adverse consequences.

ID cards are going to cost twenty billion or more, and are of no benefit whatsoever to anyone other than a future government wanting to replace our freedom by tyranny.
Scrap ID cards NOW. Spend the billions on something useful, or even just give everyone £400 of tax back! As soon as the data is collected, it can never be un-collected, and will pose a threat to our liberty for the rest of our life.
- Nigel, London
Well the thing is, apart from their own passports, pilots licences, driving licences, birth certificates, etc, etc. There is nothing by which these people can be identified! I mean just anyone could be flying these planes!
- Frank, Home Counties, England.
It is now time for our government to scrap the ridiculous ID card scheme. No terrorists will be caught; in all recent cases they were born in this country. The ID card scheme will achieve nothing except raise yet more revenue for the Inland Revenue. Put in the rubbish bin without any further delays.

This Government is deceptive, lying, anti-democratic, wasteful and incompetent, to name just a few, and in milder terms that it deserves.
According to Liebore's 2005 Manifesto, 'We will introduce ID cards, including biometric data like fingerprints, backed up by a national register and rolling out initially on a voluntary basis as people renew their passports.'
Perhaps it's academic, as Liebore won't be in power next year, so Dave should be grilled and forced to pledge not to continue with it NOW.

Everyone is the US is requited to carry a photo ID so these pilots do not have a leg to stand on. The government so do this; a drivers license with a photo is a valid Nataional ID, any one who does not have a drivers license must get the ID card, it's that simple. This will deter and catch illegal immigrants as the ID card should be a requirement for work and housing etc.

All UK airline pilots already carry their company-issued ID as well as an airside security pass issued by the airport where they are based - which requires a government 5 year background security check. Oh yes, and we carry our passports as well.
The only reason the government wants us to have their ID card as well is that we're seen as a soft target, and it's a way of forcing them on the population one group at a time.

Good for them, WELL DONE

A soft target of people who already have to jump through more hoops than a trained dog.
Why not try the "dole" offices where reaching a varied and higher cross-section of society who have NOT been PV cleared.
This stupid scheme by HMG is another nail in its coffin.

Good Morning; Reuben.
I was just being sarcastic………LOL.
I am often asked to produce my passport for identity etc; I always reply why? I am not leaving or entering the country; but standing in front of you etc; ask me what you like.
This never seems to matter; they still want to see official proof of who I am.
Identity cards will be just like driving licences, passports, birth certificates, house-hold bills, etc, etc, etc; and they still won’t believe we are, who we say we are.
The best weapon we have to use against our master’s, is to Humour them.
- Mickyinlondon, london
Mickyinlondon: CORRECT. All airline pilots carry accreditation as to their identity.
In that case WE DO NOT NEED TO WASTE COUNTLESS BILLIONS OF POUNDS FORCING AN ID CARD DOWN EVERY PEEPS' THROAT.
- Reuben Camara, Morecambe UK
Surely all airport workers; pilots and all, already have ID cards; if not; why not ?
Don’t the plane owners know who is flying their planes ?
