How the swine flu virus is spreading

China: A Mexican plane today arrived in China to collect Mexicans who have been quarantined because of fears they may be infected with swine flu. About 70 were confined despite only one confirmed case of the virus. 26 people have now died of the virus in Mexico and more than 1,000 cases have been reported in 20 countries.

Mexico: Starting to lift restrictions. Restaurants and cafés will reopen in Mexico City tomorrow and libraries, museums and churches on Thursday. Cinemas, theatres and bars will remain closed and there is no decision on reopening schools and businesses.

United States: Confirmed cases have risen from 226 to 286 in 36 states. A two-year-old Mexican boy died in the US while on a visit - the only fatality outside Mexico.

Spain: The Health Ministry confirms 54 cases in the hardest-hit country in Europe.

Colombia: Unconfirmed reports suggest the first case in South America.

Rest of the world: Two new cases confirmed in France, both people who had recently visited Mexico, raising the total to four. There are four confirmed cases in Italy and eight in Germany. In Canada, which has 101 confirmed cases, health officials recorded the first case of the H1N1 virus passing from a human to another species as they quarantined 220 pigs infected by a worker returning from Mexico.

Three cases of swine flu have been recorded in Israel, two in El Salvador, and six in New Zealand.

Other countries with only one confirmed case last night were: Ireland, Costa Rica, South Korea, Hong Kong, Denmark, Austria, Switzerland, Portugal and the Netherlands.
