EastEnders wins award for best soap

10 May 2009

EastEnders has been named the best soap at the British Soap Awards for the second year running.

It took seven awards - one more than its closest rival Coronation Street - with Robert Kazinsky, who plays Sean Slater, winning best actor.

Scott Maslen, who plays Jack Branning, won the sexiest male award. Sexiest female went to Corrie's Michelle Keegan and best actress to Katherine Kelly.

Emmerdale won a prize for the most spectacular scene - with Victoria Falls Through The Ice.

Doctors picked up three top awards, for best single episode, best storyline and best dramatic performance. Hollyoaks left empty-handed.

Coronation Street's Gray O'Brien, who plays Tony Gordon, won villain of the year and Craig Gazey, who plays Graeme Proctor, was best newcomer.

Barbara Windsor, who plays Peggy Mitchell in EastEnders, won a lifetime achievement award.

She accepted her prize from actor Steve McFadden, who plays her son in the BBC TV show.

Windsor said: "We all know what we go through, we're doing about eight episodes at the same time and they are long hours. But I love it."

Best on-screen partnership went to EastEnders' Nitin Ganatra and Nina Wadia, who play Masood Ahmed and Zainab Masood. Wadia also won best comedy performance. Maisie Smith, who plays Tiffany Dean, scooped the award for best dramatic performance from a young actor or actress.
