Man shot dead by police 'fired at officer'

11.05.09

A man who was shot dead by police is believed to have fired and hit a firearms officer during a stand-off, it was revealed today.

A bullet recovered from the tactical vest of a police marksman probably came from a Colt handgun recovered at the scene of the shooting, the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said.

The handgun, which is not used by police, was recovered from the scene where 64-year-old Mervyn Tussler was shot dead by police in the village of Fernhurst, near Midhurst, West Sussex, on Friday.

In a statement, the IPCC said today: "The bullet is not of a type used by the police and would not have come from a police weapon.

"A ballistics expert's provisional view is that it has probably come from the Colt handgun but is subject to further detailed tests."
