Struggle: police officers pull away a Tamil demonstrator in Parliament Square

Tamils climb on to Westminster Abbey roof

12.05.09

Four people were arrested today after scaling Westminster Abbey in support of the anti Sri Lanka demonstration in Parliament Square.

The three men and one woman were arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage after they spent the night on top of the Abbey. Witnesses said they unfurled banners calling for a ceasefire in Sri Lanka, whose government forces have been fighting Tamil Tiger rebels. The four are not thought to be part of the main protest outside Parliament but brought in specifically for the stunt.

Raavaniya Pararajasingam, 19, who saw the group before they scaled the roof, said: “They said they were going to do something to a prestigious building to get attention. They said they were not afraid of getting arrested, they have done it many times before.”

Some 250 remained there overnight after protesters were eventually persuaded to clear roads and retreat back into Parliament Square.

The renewed impetus into a campaign that began in the Square five weeks ago was spurred by a UN announcement that the north of the south Asian country where civilian Tamils are being contained in a zone by the army had become “a blood bath”.

Angered at what they see as a lack of action by Britain, Tamils from across London are promising more disruption to highlight their cause.

A group of Tamil protesters scale Westminster Abbey

Selvan Kulban, 32, from Guildford, Surrey, said: “My cousin is in the conflict area, my brother-in-law was injured there and his three-month-old baby has lost its right hand. I don't care if I lose my job, I am here to stay.”

Many of the people who blocked off parts of Whitehall and Great George Street have been living at the protest camp since its inception last month.

They wash where they can, use public toilets and rely on donations of food and water from a close-knit Sri Lankan community that brings them regular supplies.

Lib Dem MP Simon Hughes, a supporter who is also a Shadow Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, was given a rapturous welcome by protesters as he spoke to them about their campaign.

Veterans of the Parliament Square camp include 21-year-old Pavani Srikanda, a wheelchair-bound student who has abandoned her studies to join the group.

She said: “It has been difficult, the last few days especially, but we are going to keep going.”

She and others like 17-year-old A-level student Bharathy Maheswaran have to wash in public toilets and sleep wherever and whenever they can.

Large parts of their days are spent chanting slogans and devising new strategies to keep their fight alive.

Like many at the make-shift camp business student Balamuhunthan Balamuhunthan, 21, sometimes leaves to sleep on Tubes or in hospital accident and emergency waiting rooms.

He said: “It is now or never. We have created so much awareness people are now talking about us and we are slowly getting noticed.”

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “A total of 45 people were arrested, 41 for wilful obstruction of a highway, one for violent disorder, one for a public order offence, two for assaults on police. Two officers suffered minor injuries.”

Gov of UK has asked for a ceasefire. What more would they like us to do?
We care about the non-combatants being held hostage by the Tamil Tigers, and the mistreatment of those who escape the no fire zone and are put in internment camps by the Sri Lankan government. We don't however care about the Tigers or their leadership, the reality is there are no good guys in this conflict, only shades of grey.
If the protesters are asking from only one side, they are not really caring about the civilians trapped. Looks like some other agenda.

- Shaun-Rdg, UK

what LTTE is doing in NFZ?Its for civilians isn't it?

- Max, london

This issue has gone beyond the point of who is right and who is wrong. Both the LTTE and the Sri Lankan government have committed countless atrocities over the past 26 years. But today, there are thousands of innocents caught in the no-fire zone with no way of escape. The UN has testified to this. I don't deny that the protestors in Parliament Square are well meaning in their efforts to draw attention to the plight of their people. But, sadly, they are having the opposite effect and detracting from it.

People like Suzy and Steve are not informed enough hence their pointless comments. However, there are others who will empathise with the anguish and frustration of the protestors. The world has finally opened its eyes to the cruelty of the Sinhala Sri-Lankan government.

- Your Missing The Point, London

I understand the frustration of the British Citizens & Tax Payers. It’s the same frustration that drives these protesters to do these things as well.

I have seen all sorts of comments written by various people telling about why these protesters are pestering British and how good the Sri Lankan Government is and so on…???

The civil war started in Sri Lanka because of the British Colonisation as this is the cause for most of the issues currently prevailing in some of the Asian & African countries. Both the British Government & the protesters knew this very well.

For those who trying to come up with various stories about what’s currently happening in the Sri Lankan ware zone (or Government’s Safe Zone), the answer is simple. No body knows the truth…its just speculation.

What we need are independent observers into this area. But Sri Lankan Government don’t want these people in the war/safe zone. They are not even allowing any form of independent observers into any where closer to the so called rescued people from these areas.

Why??? Who is scared of the truth??? Use your imagination…

Sri Lankan government is saying that it’s fighting a war on terror. But the countries China & Russia who supports Sri Lanka’s action in UN, saying that it’s a Civil War and it’s an internal matter.

If I put these two statements together, my conclusion is Sri Lanka is fighting the Civil War using its terror methods.

I hope now you should understand the frustration of these

- Dr. K. Chelvan, UK

If my family was being massacred I would go to their assistance not demonstrate in a city on the other side of the planet..... Why don't these people take some real action? Maybe deportation would be the most appropriate punishment for those arrested now and in any future demonstrations.

- Suzy, London, England

Reply to Mathew D, London, England

Have you questioned about our tax money is still being wasted in the name of MP’s expenses? Have you questioned about hundreds of UK solders life and billion of pounds tax payers money wasted in Iraq? Have you questioned about tax payers money pumped in to Banking system to cover up their losses and still the big bosses getting their bonuses? The answer in NO!!! then why are you questioning about this protest? If you can see the ‘strange flag’ can’t you hear what they are shouting for? Of course you’re not the one who is paying doll money by your tax and we do pay tax may be more than you. They are not job less people like you. They took holidays to come and protest. If they are job less then they’ll be at home not there at cold. Don’t try to be smart and don’t tell the British government when to arrest those protestors.

- Alan Dolby, Dunstable

The World(including Tamils) should put pressure on LTTE terrorist to release civilians. Not on the legitimate government who is fighting terrorism. Those Tamil demonstrators who came to Europe as a Azylem seekers who smugled by LTTE. They had to pay certain amount of money to LTTE every month otherwise their love once in Wanni was in a trouble. Now LTTE keep those people as a human shield as they know once those civilians leave they are going to get killed by SLA.

- Max, London

I can understand the frustration to those people who protesting more than a month at Parliament square. Can any one sit at home and write cool comments when your relatives are being massacred? British government should act soon to stop the blood bath on the North-eastern cost. By reading at some of these comments I can see how Tamils and Singhalese are divided in to. I like to tell those Singhalese friends that this country has freedom of speech unlike Sri Lanka. The media reporters can report the actual situation and we won’t deport them like the Srilankan government did. I can also see that you are trying to make blame the LTTE but not to help the innocent. Be human first and then support any political or ethnic group. UN said more then 6500 civilian been killed and what do think. To kill or arrest Pirabakatran can you kill thousands more? My point, if Pirabakaran is terrorist then the government of Sri Lanka is the terrorist too.

- Dr Ian Fairbank, London

People those who are supporting the Srilankan government have blood in their hands. It’s obvious that the government is preventing international media and aid agencies to the conflict zone because they’ll bring the untold truth to the light as the channel 4 did. People at Parliament square supporting for their relatives and friends those who are slaughtered everyday by barbaric Srilankan government. Some Singhalese those who written here asked a question why we Tamils not protesting against LTTE to release those people. Well, we can do but once they come to your government control what will you do? Abuse them sexually, make them disappear, make them to beg for food???? The sin you are committing will be paid back. In the name of war against terrorist, you are doing genocide.

- Theepan, London

Sitting here in Sri Lanka -it is amazing to read the report-here the protesters conduct would not be tollerated - the LTTE leader Prabacharan should release the hostages being used as a humam shield and allow the Tamil people being held to free themselves from the conflict area. The SL Government daily reports say that the conflict is nearing a close.Let us all hope so-The area will need to be rebuilt with foreign money -for sure -so bankers unite and bring the issue to an end making loans conditional on acknowledging human rights for peace and eductaion etc etc.

- Keith G Skelton, Colombo : Sri Lanka

Isn't it time that the authorities took some action against these protestors? Surely, they have gone beyond what is reasonable. As Edmund Burke observed, there is a point at which forbearance ceases to be a virtue, and it seems to me that point has been reached in this case

- Cassandra, perth australia

I agree with Ss. If LTTE is standing for Tamil people why don't they release innocent civilians from hostage. Tamil diaspora should protest against Tamil tigers to release the civilians. This clearly indicates that the protesters more worried about wiping out of terrorists.

- Carl, Winnipeg, Canada

Britain people must thank these terrorist supporters for not bombing Westminister Abbey. LTTE terrorists the ones who drove suicide bombing lorries to temples and killed hundreds in temples and mosques.

- Polbanda, Ratnapura, SRI LANKA

See what the LTTE terrorist supporters are doing to the Briton society and imagine the arrogance they have. So think of your future, British people. Meanwhile MR. Miliband to save LTTE terrorist leader.

- Polbanda, Colombo, Sri Lanka

As a Britsh Tax payer I would like to know how the antics of these tamil tiger sympathisers are costing us . Will the Uk ever learn lessons from SL where all Sri Lankans,Tamils Sinhalese ,BURGHERS , Malays , have sufferd for the past 25 yeas as a result of their false claims . The experts, and pundits who report biased reports without speaking the language of the locals ,are adding fuel to the fire . The journalsists have much to contribute to the misery just as much as the LTTE.

- Harijana, uk

These people should be arrested for blocking London streets and displaying/ waving a banned terrorist organisation flag and their leaders photo. Their leader Prabhakaran is a mass murderer wanted by the Interpol and India for assasinating the Indian premier and other serious crimes. He used the Tsunami aid to buy an arsenal of weapons to kill innocent people in Sri Lanka.

Would you put up with a group of people demonstrating in front of UK parliament waving Hamas flags and Osama Bin Laden's photos and blocking London streets for weeks? This is madness!

- Manesh, London, UK

I have one thing to say to British government and people,
You have been indirectly supporting LTTE to destroy our country (Sri Lanka)by allowing LTTE to operate in UK. Even today your foreigh secretary, Miliband is involved in a campaign agaist SL to save LTTE leader. You have been sympethetic to LTTE supporters and giving VISAs to enter your country. Those LTTE supporter who were grown up in SL, educated by SL and received all other facilities like healthcare and all then work agaist their own country. They don't care about their own civilians. If they are so concerned they should go and fight with army. Because these are the same people who suppoted and were proud of their so called eelam war. Now they are harrassing UK citizens because they are losing.

- Manjula Gnaneswaram, Melbourne Australia

Can the met and the mayor explain why taxpayers money is used for over a month or so that the police just stand together with these hooligans and watch their illegal activities (i.e. continuesly gridlocking London streets, climbing on W. Abbey roof) (whilst waving some strange foreign flag with guns, right in front of parliament), instead of arresting them?
Do these people not have any jobs to go to? Oh yes, we are paying their dole too.

- Mathew D, London, England

This is just going too far. The Sri Lankan government is fighting a terrorist group just as we would do. The Tamil people should be asking their beloved Tigers to allow the civilian they are keeping hostage to leave the war zone. These protesters are all terrorist sympathisers. Our police force should wake up and stop these hooligans. Simon Hughes can sing for their vote and money as much as he wants. He is anyway finished at the next election.

- Gerald, Twickenham

Tamil terrorist leder not listing to United Nations organization. They keep our Tamil people as human shield.

UK Terrorist branch as same. They are not respecting any Law or any religione..They are collecting money and send to Sri Lanka.Everithing meaning less. After 30 years we need to wakeup. We need to respect All Humans in the world.

- Nadaraja, Edmonton

None of these protestors care about the innocent people herded by the terror leader. These fabricated claims are to justify the genocide claim. The terror agenda is clear and the leader ordered to plant explosives to each and every bunker and hut to stage a mass killing at the last moment. They will explode these low caste poor civilians to seal the genocide claim and will sort the corrupted western politicians help to bring the Kosovo agenda here. Then the next stage will be in Tamil Nadu and the master plan ends with wiping out all the other ethnicities to create the greater mono-ethnic Tamil home land for 80 million Tamils. This agenda was formed in early 1930s. The corrupted media and politicians in west gave wrong messages to the other terrorists and will pay diplomatic dilemmas in future. Majority of Sri Lankans are rural based and the rural economy is self sufficient. The economic restrictions will not make Sri Lanka cripple but will expose the cussedness of the egoistic western politicians.

- Dr.Ganesh Kuganathan, London , UK

Hundreds of people are being slaughtered in Sri Lanka as we slinging mud on each other. Can people of the humanity come together and do something constructively to save atleast the remainging people..........please................

- Sohan, London, UK

These people are not loyal to UK.These people use British citizenship to do their sordid activities on uk soil.pl ckeck their immigration status.the most important thing is UK opportunistic politicians want to protect these tamil terrorists to get elected to the parliament with majority. These miserable and disgusting politicians must get rid of the constituncies.

- Wije Mala, Canada

Good lesson for the British for allowing refugee status for these terrorist supporters, now you are reaping the consequences. For 30 years they killed innocent people by suicide bombing massacred unarmed innocent Sinhala villagers and created havoc in Sri Lanka and when their terrorist movement is about to be wiped out, they start to create havoc in London and Toronto.

- Bhumi, Melbourne Australia

If they are supporting the Tamils why on earth are they wearing Tamil tiger shirts and holding tamil tiger flags? Not all Tamils are tigers/terrorists.
The older generation of the Tamil population knows exactly what the truth is unlike these youngsters.

High time to accept that these are a bunch of terrorists

- Kj, shoreham,UK

Why is it that none of the demonstrators globally are asking the LTTE to release their civlians without further bloodshed. Could it be that they are supporting the tigers and therefore allied to terrorists. Send the riot troops in, you would if it were cheering for Al Queda

My trust respect faith in Britain is over/done with.I hate this country I once loved respected and would have died for.WHY?British MPs Keith sleazy crook Vaz,Simon save Tamil terrorists for votes Hughes,Joanna I'm in marginal vote territory Ryan,Gareth ge me more Evans,Virendra fund vote for me Sharma, Sioban I know it all Joanna's my friend MacDonagh etc have literally prostituted themselves for votes/funds from an evil/dangerous terrorist group and their front organisations.David ignorant stupid naive etc Miliband is a disgrace -a careless wicked man guided by votes/funds.While innocent poor Tamil civilians have been kept under LTTE control undemocratically for 30 years, enough evidence that they are being used as a human shield, being shot at,bombed and maimed by the LTTE terrorists to save the 4 terrorist leaders' skin, the diaspora Tamils who are mostly terrorist supporters live in UK, Canada,USA,EU,Australia bribing thir way with votes and donations/criminal funds! The genuinely poor innocent Tamils never got out!Now they are threatening us in Parliament square and at cricket matches where Sri lanka plays.I dont feel safe in this country any more because MPs/police cannot control mobs of terrorist supporters.Britain invaded Iraq, destroyed tortured maimed people and left them in a terrible state falsely fighting terrorism. Now weapons of mass destruction are in Parliament Square UK supports them!Shame on Britain.Make Tamil Eelam a separate state in Parliament Square UK!!!!!

- Sharon R, Cambridge UK

Please stop Genocide of Tamils.
CHannel4 news has got lots of evidence..

Tamils been protesting since 6 april..
Please british Gov. Wake up.. Help them and stop the war.
PEACE..

- Jj, Bromley

Miliband, wait and see what happens. Today only two policemen injered. Tomorrow it will be a tamil tiger bomb. Today Westminster abbay. Tomorrow it will be whole of UK. Tax payers money wasted inspite of the grave financila crisis UK facing. Wake up Miliband Wake up UK.

- Manjula, Abu Dhabi

Will the Met kindly wake up from their PC slumber? We live in hope..

- Schweigen, London, UK

The Tamil civilians in Sri Lanka are held hostage by Tamil Tiger Terrorists. They are not 'contained in a zone by the army' as the article suggets.

These Tamil demonstrators should protest against the Tamil terrorists asking them to release the poeple from the human sheild.

- Ss, london

Will the government kindly disclose how much this circus has been costing the taxpayer for the last month or so?

- Schweigen, London, UK

What is it that the International Community CAN do?There is rerally nothing they can do.These stupid Tamils are just being hysterical or perhaps this a funeral rite.
The tigers can lay down their arms and there will be a cessation of hostilities.
Mano

- Mano, new jersey,guttenberg usa

These violent, arrogant tamils have no respect for any laws of any country! If they can do these acts in England, can one imagine what they were doing in Sri Lanka?(or would do?)They have more weapons than a conventional army! PUT THEM IN BRIXTON PRISON>
THANK YOU!

- Gerard Mano, vancouver, canada

The excellent Met police should have let these people jump into the river thames instead of spending tax payers money on saving them from the waters, and then causing further congestion in our already packed streets!

- James Taylor, London

How did they get them off the roof? I hope police didn't have to risk their lives going up after them, thats what police snipers are for.

- Jj, London

Interesting how the ones with the dodgy names condone this behaviour.Just goes to show we may all live in the same city together but we're worlds apart.

- Steve, London

What sympathy I had for their cause has now evaporated, following this action. The Met Police and the British public have been very patient in allowing this protest. It`s now time to put an end to it. Our patience has been stretched too far.

- Monty, Tottenham, London

I warned sometime ago that these TTT proxies would bring violance to the streets of London. This is only the beginning if the police do not act fast.

- Ram2009, Reading, UK

Wonder if Al'Quaeda supporters could do the same in London? I think that the authorities should take decisive actions agains this group of people.

- Dmitry, Moscow, Russia

i am sorry to write this but i cant help but feel the police are tolerating this purely on the basis of skin colour. how can they arrest and charge someone for reading out the names of war dead yet tolerate weeks of very disruptive action by this group. shame on the govt.

- Aesir, london

This is what happens when you are the dustbin of the world. Nearest safe country, what rot !!

- Grim Reaper, Hell

We are not responsible for the whole world's sins and we have some rather large problems with which to deal.

- Min Nie Ovens, London, UK

As a British citizen of English heritage I find it deeply offensive for Tamils to climb on Westminster Abbey, a religious site of great significance to my own culture. We are constantly told by our political elite that we must respect the culture and beliefs of those who migrate to our shores, and this is fair enough. But there appears to be no obligation on those communities to show a single iota of respect to the culture of the people of this country and their heritage.

- Danny, London

Sri Lanka is not part of the United Kingdom, so why are they not demonstrating outside the SriLankan embassy and the United Nations? The insult of clambering over one of our churches is a gross insult to British tolerance, and will only fuel antipathy to their cause.

- Martinh, Hitchin

please bring this situation under control.
Both parties need RECONSILIATION ,Forgiveness and some sort of help.

- Manmathan, london

So we are now allowing people to take over one of the most important English, Christian buildings? Is that what has become of our once great nation?

I'd like to see the reaction if a white, Christian protestor climbed to the top of a important Hindu or Islamic building to show his/her cause.

Disgusting

- Lb, London

As a Tamil I am appalled by the the actions of these rowdies who are discrediting their safe haven. We know as adults that these younger versions of LTTE Terror International cannot be controlled by anybody just like their monstrous mentor - Prabhakaran. Several Tamil senior citizens tried in vain to work out a deal to put an end to useless demonstrations but unfortunately those calls were unheeded by youths. So, we kindly request the peace loving UK public to forgive us and not use the same paint brush for all Tamils. We are grateful for your hospitality.

Yesterday, some MPs raised their concerns in the House telling that they could not even attend sessions in time. The speaker was angry and wants to make a statement later this week. What speaker should do is to summon the Commissioner of Met Police and urge him to take swift action to flush out these thugs. However, MPs who are against these demos will face stiff resistance from their own colleagues who are rallying behind Tamils for votes and other perks.

If Police is not willing to take tough action the protestors will harm the monumental structures such as Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey etc. Considering the track record of their terrorist brothers and sisters in Sri Lanka I should say that this is inevitable. So, UK should act before it is too late.

- V Kanagalingam, London, UK

This is not a legitimate protest in the UK. Our police should arrest anyone causing a problem in Parliament Square, why should we suffer for their cause. The Tamils have been a problem in Sri Lanka for many years and the sooner that the Sri Lankan forces deal conclusively with them the better.

- M Wilkinson, London UK

This is the start of things to come. The British Government have been looking through rose tinted spectacles at these people and now they are paying the price. These people are supporters of the LTTE terror group. Why don;t the police realise this and stop this illegal protests. Freedom of Speach is one thing but this unruly thuggish behaviour should not be tolerated. What scant respect they show of the abbey to climb on its roof., Ask them stand on top on a hindu Kovil!

- Tharun Gnanapragasam, London

"protesters were eventually persuaded to clear roads". The police should have fired water canon at them and then arrested all of them. These Tamils are causing too much disruption in London. I used to think they were peaceful people; now I know they are not.

- Cameron, London

How dare these people, essentially supporters of a terrorist group, desecrate a place of Christian worship by climbing onto the roof of Westminster Abbey to display their political banners etc. Its about time the authorities stepped in and got rid of the lot of them as our patience is wearing thin. It's a prime example of people wanting the penny and the bun - they wanted independence from Britain and then come running when it all goes wrong. We have our own problems to contend with. You've made your protest, made your point, now go away.

- Sue, London

As Tamil I would like to thank your reports about Tamils protests in front of the Parliament.
I very disappointed by British Government's actions which I feel slow and not effective. As I am writing this there are more innocent civilians lives lost by Sri Lankan Army. All this happeining in the name of fight against Tamil Tigers. Those who know the histroy of our freedom struggle would understand why Tamils Tigers had to carry Arms and why majority of Tamils feel that Tamil Tigers represent them. Tamils are fighting against Genocide. The slaughtering of Tamils gone to the peak and last weekend it was about 2000 people.
I would like to appeal to British people and British Media to support for our freedom struggle. As a Tamil I regret the innconveninece at times for public by our protests but I hope any freedom loving British citizen would understand and this about desperate cry for help to stop the genocide and saving lives of follow human beings.

- Mohanakumar Kanagalingam, Harrow

"Four men slipped past the flanks of officers sent to contain the crowds before climbing hundreds of feet up scaffolding on the Gothic church's north side".

So much for security then!!!

- Alan, East London

If we had known about the protest beforehand, we could've given them a few nails, fresh slates and cement in case they spotted any wear and tear while they were up there.

- Doug Watt, london e14

It's a pity that our law enforcement officers haven't been as active as their counterparts in Canada

Tamil terror group's manual revealed
http://www.nationalpost.com/news/story.html?id=492287

Or read Janes:

"The LTTE is a role model and a trend-setter for existing and emerging terrorist groups in Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America. The international security and intelligence community generally assesses the LTTE as the world's most ruthless terrorist organisation. It is the only organisation to have assassinated two heads of government...

"The LTTE international network operates in at least 40 countries. International propaganda and fund-raising is mostly co-ordinated by LTTE leaders based both in the UK and France"

http://www.janes.com/security/international_security/news/sentinel/sent000904_6_n.shtml

It's also a shame that the media in this country haven't focussed on what's been going on right under their noses for years.
