Countdown to Baby P tragedy

May 2003: Great Ormond Street Hospital brought in to “rescue” Haringey child protection clinic after Victoria Climbié scandal. Four consultant paediatricians are hired to staff the clinic.

2004-2005: Consultants complain of inadequate staffing and that clinic is chaotic. They say complaints are ignored.

June 2006: Consultants write joint letter to Great Ormond St and Haringey warning of “very high risk” that an abused child will die.

Sept 2006: Dr Wariyar resigns. Dr Holt told by managers she is “unwell” and cannot work.

Nov 2006: Dr el-Basheer resigns. Dr Holt not allowed to return.

Feb 2007: Dr Holt formally placed on leave. Dr Banerjee goes sick.

23 Mar 2007: Baby P attends clinic. Mother claims injuries are “accidental”.

10 April 2007: Social worker requests follow-up appointment to check on “accidental” injuries.

June 2007: Social workers make further request for follow-up appointment.

1 August 2007: Baby P finally gets appointment. None of the consultants remains, so seen by locum doctor who misses fact he has broken back and sends him home.

3 August 2007: Baby P dies.
