Appeal: three council workers sacked over the Baby P case may take their claim to a tribunal

Three appeal on Baby P sacking

Anna Davis, Education Correspondent
21 May 2009

Three council workers dismissed over the death of baby P have appealed against their sackings.

Cecilia Hitchen, Maria Ward and Gillie Christou could win thousands at an employment tribunal. They were dismissed without compensation from Haringey council last month after the death of 17-month-old baby Peter, who died after abuse.

If Haringey council upholds the sackings they could take their case to a tribunal.

Baby Peter's mother, her lover and lodger are awaiting sentence for his death in August 2007.

Social worker Ms Ward, 39, failed to spot the abuse and Ms Christou, 50, a child protection register boss, agreed Peter should stay with his mother. They were both on up to £40,000 a year and were sacked for gross misconduct.

Ms Hitchen, deputy director of children and families, was sacked for “loss of trust” in her ability. She had been on £80,000 a year.

In a real world they would be slung out and get nothing for the way that they they let down this child.

I am wondering on what ground are these people appealing against the sacking. It seems to be these people are responsible for NOT protecting baby P and they did not discharge their responsibility at all.
