On a roll: How I became a happy human hamster

Sri Carmichael, Consumer Affairs Reporter
22.05.09

Hamsters worked it out a long time ago, but I discovered it today. There is something utterly joyful about running round and round in a rolling tube. I arrived at the Tate Modern fretting about crumpling my dress and resigned to embarrassing myself in the name of journalism. But within minutes, I was lost in the simple pleasures of climbing, swinging and sliding.

I teetered on a narrow beam, squeezed through a tunnel, swung on a rope and crawled up a wooden slope. Some remaining modicum of inhibition restrained me from actually skipping between the challenges. A child again, focusing purely on my body and balance, I felt more relaxed than I had in months. And In these straitened times something that gives you such a boost for free is something to jump at. Literally.
