Success: Georgia Gould has been chosen to fight the marginal ward of Kentish Town in next year’s local elections

Georgia Gould selected for Camden seat

27 May 2009

Georgia Gould has finally succeeded in her bid to become a Labour candidate after being selected for a Camden council seat.

The 23-year-old daughter of Tony Blair's favourite pollster Philip Gould has been chosen to fight the marginal ward of Kentish Town in next year's local elections.

This month, Ms Gould came third in the race for the safe Labour seat of Erith and Thamesmead. She told the Standard last week that she felt she was a victim of smears in the campaign for the parliamentary constituency.

A former pupil at Camden School for Girls, allies point out that her selection for the Kentish Town ward means she is finally the “local candidate”.

Ms Gould, who was accused of being too privileged and too inexperienced to become an MP, will become one of Labour's youngest councillors if she wins.

The Tories must be rubbbing their hands in glee at having another of the Gould clan standing in Camden after her less than honourable or successful attempt in Erith and Thamesmead. Still what else can you expect from New Labour!

The first step onto the greasy pole as a professional politician. Safe Labour seat becomes your personal property until you finally exhaust all the available privileges and think its time to move to "Europe". The sky's the limit with even more benefits and allowances and glory. Then a peerage, a golden handshake and finally a generous index-linked pension to look forward to when its time to put your feet up. This young lady certainly has her head screwed on doesn't she?

If she is voted in then the Camden Electorate deserve her. I personally blieve she is unqualified in every respect.

Have you just arrived from Australia mate? Are you totally oblivious to huge amount of anger amongst the populace at the moment? Especially at the likes of people like this little girls daddy. I'd keep your head down if I were you - mate.

Nice to see the hereditary principle being so staunchly upheld in Labour circles. Like waving the red flag at a bull.

Why is everyone critiscising her and slagging her off all the time.

I mean she is young, full of "bright" ideas/classroom theories, has never had a proper full time job, has no experience of the real world, and got the nomination through who she knows.

Sounds like an ideal Labour candidate I would have thought.

In Victoria, Australia where I am originally from we have a number of young councillors - I think the youngest elected that I know of was 19 at the time. Whilst the role and budget of councillors differs between Australia and the UK, I found that young councillors tend to be just as good as older councillors or often even better. Indeed, some young councillors were very impressive and talented individuals. Therefore, I think it's unfair to hold age against a candidate for council, better to focus on their policies and their vision for their ward and council. As for being an MP, I definetly think 23 is too young - There is much more responsibility than a councillor and a different dynamic in parliament, think you need more experience and maturity in order to be an effective MP.

At least she's trying to get her political feet wet at the sharp end. Her politics may leave something to be desired, but her resolve has to be admired.

All the same arguments hold, nepotism, immaturity, no life experience, manipulative Labour politics, etc. etc.

Go and get a proper job precious.

Good luck to her! I doubt she & I would agree on much politically, but I admire her resolve and I hope she gets a chance to be judged on her own merits, rather than by the politics of envy.

Not sure if she would be less dangerous as an MP or a local councillor.

MPs have proven themselves over the last few weeks to be corrupt and greedy, but ultimately harmless, since most laws are enacted by the EU; however, local councillors are really in at the coalface and they control the kinds of people that let down Baby P.

And there should be a minimum age and experience qualification to be an elected official. Twenty-three and the offspring of a Labour supporter are not sufficient criteria.

Oh good. I hear the expenses there are almost as good as an MP's. Beats doing a real job doesn't it.

Just what the UK needs a new generation of freeloading sponging wet behind the ears political animals.

Georgia if your reading this ...go google self respect then go get yourself a regular nine to five job ..not in 'meeja' or 'freddies' art gallery. But a real job with real duties. Try becoming say a council parking warden, try meeting REAL people for a change. It's your only hope to avoid becoming a self absorbed cliched spoilt brat.
