Threat to post as union votes for strikes

Post workers across London have voted for strike action.

Collection and delivery would be hugely disrupted if the threatened series of 24-hour walkouts goes ahead, though post offices would remain open.

Services could also be affected outside London because of the knock-on effect. Union bosses have not yet announced strike dates, to allow further talks with Royal Mail.

The Communication Workers Union ordered the strike ballot in protest over job threats and working conditions. It claims 1,600 jobs are at risk out of 13,000 in the London area and also warns of cuts in services.

Martin Walsh, CWU spokesman for London, said: "It is clear Royal Mail is deliberately running down the service ahead of partial privatisation."

Last month Royal Mail announced a record operating profit of £312 million.
