A Tamil terror chief who allegedly handed cyanide pills to child soldiers is living in a London suburb, the Standard can reveal.
Sri Lankan intelligence officials believe Adele Balasingham, 59, is one of the most senior figures in the remains of the terror group which fought a 26-year war for independence on the island and was defeated last month.
They claim she has played a key role in organising protests by Tamils outside Parliament and want Britain to take action against her.
Sri Lanka's government believes Tamil Tiger leaders abroad are raising funds and procuring equipment which could be used in fresh attacks.
Mrs Balasingham lives in a £500,000 house in New Malden, Surrey. She is the widow of Anton Balasingham, a Sri Lankan with British citizenship who was the chief political strategist of the Tamil Tigers until he died in 2006.
Mrs Balasingham, an Australian-born nurse, met and married him while he was living in London in the Seventies. She became deeply involved in the Tigers' cause - ending up as the leader of its women soldiers and nicknamed "Aunty" on the island.
An undated video of Mrs Balasingham, showing her in camouflage fatigues and presiding over a parade of female child soldiers, has been circulated to confirm her status as one of the movement's most influential figures.
The female Tamil Tiger fighters, some thought to be as young as 14, have completed three months of training.
She is seen presenting them with cyanide capsules to be worn on a necklace and swallowed if they are about to be captured by troops.
Her presence in Britain has increased tensions between Britain and Sri Lanka, which believes the Government has been "too soft" on Tiger associates since banning the group in 2001.
A senior Sri Lankan High Commission source told the Standard: "Given the association of Mrs Balasingham with the senior ranks of the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) she could be seen as a sole survivor.
"She was involved in taking major decisions in the hierarchy of the LTTE and there is a possibility that supporters will rally around her in Britain.
"We believe the Parliament Square protests were organised directly from the Tamil Tigers leadership... and Mrs Balasingham has been a main point of contact in the UK for this."
Representatives of the Sri Lankan government are to meet Scotland Yard and the Home Office in the coming weeks for talks on the Tigers' presence in Britain. There are fears a new faction of the Tamil Tigers could emerge, fuelled by anger over the number of innocent people killed by the Sri Lankan army in its offensive against the militants.
Mrs Balasingham, who rarely leaves her four-bedroom home, declined to speak to the Standard. In her 2001 book The Will To Freedom: An Inside View Of Tamil Resistance, she wrote about staying as a "guest of honour" with Tigers' founder Velupillai Prabhakaran.
Scotland Yard said they were unable to comment on ongoing inquiries.

As a tamil I am very disappointed at this. We protested to save our people's lives. We asked Gordon Brown to bring about cease fire but nobody cared.
Death toll stands at more than 20,000 (according to The Times)and more than 30,000 maimed (according to The Telegraph).
GoSL lied over the number of people displaced. They repeatedly said there were only 70,000 in vanni region, when we had the actual figure as 350,000 by the government agent in vanni.
Now the government says there are 280,000 people in the IDP camps where as they have been lying as only 70,000. now what happened to the rest of the people?
Why are we protesting now? To save people's lives in those camps where people have little or no food, sanitation is appalling, children are being abducted or abused, women are being raped and then killed,young men being tortured and killed.
What do you want us to do sir?.. stand idle? would you do that if that happen to your family?
This GoSL is vomiting vorms of lies, lies after lies. Sri Lanka is doing something what no other country on earth would do for their own people.same mistake we did in Rwanda is being repeated. Please don't be part of it.
At times like this do you really want to rub salt into our wounds?. Is it that difficult to distiguish the difference between terrorism and nationalism?

I was totally disgusted to read the article about Adele Balasingam. The Sri Lankan Government has killed in excess of 20 000 Tamil civilians, and all your newspaper can do is hound an old lady who lives in New Malden! The way the article is worded, It makes me wonder if The Evening Standard is indeed owned by the Sri Lankan Government.
Today, there is planned to be a protest at Lords Cricket Ground (please see below). I hope your Reporter Amar Singh will be there. It would also be worthy of your newspaper if you publish the facts relating to the hypocrisy of the ICC in banning South Africa playing cricket here (during apartheid), and Zimbabwe (at present, due to human rights violations) but doing nothing about Sri Lanka.
May I also take this opportunity to remind you that the Sri Lankan regime has killed 14 Journalists in the last three years. I would have thought that you, as Journalists, owe it to them not to pander to the Propaganda Team at 13 Hyde Park Gardens.

I have come to know that you criticize the Tamil's demonstration (Today's London Evening Standard) and their protest for a political solution to the ethnic conflict. First of all I am sorry to express my strongest condemnation of such interpretations that Adela Balasingam is behind the allegation you made.
No one now talks about the tigers or their demise. Sri lanka should address the graveness of Tamils and need a solution to address their aspirations. World should adopt a meaningful action to achieve this by political means. Until that the Tamils will protest and fight politically to achieve their goals.
Please do not write any baseless allegations to divert our struggle. In the name of terrorism, Tamils were killed and mimed and were not given any solution. Now there is no terrorism, then the Sri lanka has obligation to address Tamil graveness.

I don't want to waste my time to prove Sri Lanka is a terrorist country, its leaders are terrorist and all they say is lies.
All the proof is out there for any interested person to read. But just I will tell one example and end my letter: Few weeks ago when U.N. Emergency Relief Coordinator John Holmes was in Sri Lanka and he didn't have a translator and he relied on translation given by an Government minister which turned out to be a lie.
This is what actually happened and reported in the paper: "Inner City Press asked the UN to confirm or deny that Holmes relied on the Sri Lankan government's Minister of Relocation to translate, and that when a woman said her son was abducted by the Army, the Sri Lankan government Minister translated that and told Holmes that she had said her son was taken by the Tamil Tigers. No answer."
If a Government Minister would tell a lie like this, imagine what an ordinary Tamil civilian had to say to save his/her life. Sri Lankan government is spending millions of dollars on lobbying, propaganda, gifts, lunch and dinner to journalists and others etc. to promote their lies.
Sri Lanka has even bought out UN members. Otherwise how can they justify sending Nambiar to Sri Lanka to investigate the situation when his brother has been working as a consultant for the Sri Lankan army for the last 5 years.
Had Mr. Amar ever criticized the Sri Lankan government for its genocide, human rights violation and targeted killings of journalist etc. The answer is "NO" and that is because... you guessed it correctly.

When 20,000 Tamils have died in the final onslaught of the civil war, why is the fact the widow of LTTE strategist Anton Balasingham is living in the UK a major story? She has been here for several years and has not taken a public role in politics since her husband's death in 2006.
The suggestions by the Sri Lankan authorities that she has been key to co-ordinating the protests in London is insulting - we weren't ordered by anyone to go to Parliament Square, it was a movement all the community wanted to take part in.
Now that the war is over in Sri Lanka, the UK and other Western countries must rethink their ban on the LTTE.
The organisation does not pose a military threat, as it has wiped out as a fighting force; it remains however a unifying political force among Tamils around the world, and for the proscription to be lifted would hugely increase Tamils' trust in Western governments and boost future efforts to build peace in Sri Lanka.

I am ashamed and disgusted by a Sri Lankan government that has destroyed any semblance of democracy and has clearly committed unspeakable atrocities against the Tamil people of Sri Lanka. Question is is it illegal to hold a protest in a democratic country. In Sri Lanka when tamils protested in the 1950' and 60's state sponsored mobs squashed it morally worst than the Tiannamen Square massacre because it was the ordinary sinhalese man that attacked their tamil neighbours in a democratically elected country with the institutions that supposed to protect them aiding in the violence. Where as it is more understandable for a single party government to maintain control over its citizens through brutality.
As a member of the Tamil community and as a recent graduate I tell you when a group of fellow British students got together and started this protest 2 months ago how can you give credit to such an achievement of the 3rd generation of Eelam nationalists and 2nd generation immigrants to the LTTE.
The Vaddokodai resolution of 1977 created by Chelvanyagam Q.C. means that the Eelam Nationalist will never disappear. Eelam is not illegal in this country just like kosovo was not illegal. The chauvinistic and oppressive laws of Sri Lanka does not apply to this democratic country. Therefore Tamils will protest for Tamil human Rights and Tamil Eelam until it is granted, whether in 10 years or 100 years.
Give credit to where it is due and i am sorry to tell the GoSl that Adele Balasingham has no control over this protest in any way so better luck next time to squash the Tamil Diaspora.

I have participated in protests in Parliament square and the 2 large protest marches. I can assure you I was not influenced by anyone but felt obliged to express my anguish at the slaughter of Tamils and the incarceration of survivors in Nazi internment camps. This is the reason why thousands protested.
It is an undisputed fact that over 20,000 were killed by the Sri Lankan terror state within the first five months of this year.
Having enslaved Tamils in Sri Lanka, the terror state is now trying to stifle Tamils in the free world. In Sri Lanka we would all have been either abducted never to be seen again or left to rot in internment camps.
It is a fact that Sri Lanka has consistently lied claiming that they did not kill any civilians and that all Tamils are being looked after in the “Welfare” camps.
No-one has the moral right to prosecute Adel Balasingham. She should not be handed to the terror state as they do not believe in the due process of law.

As a western doctor working in the northeast of srilanka during the Tsunami period, I personally, the sinhalese srilankan army denying foreign aid to the tamils and diverting it to the sinhalese areas. The tamils and sinhalese of srilanka have very different language, religion, tradition and culture and srilanka is ethinically very polarized between tamisl and the sinhalese. Ever since the the british gave the majority northeast tamils of the northeast to be ruled by the southern sinhalese the country has become another Ruwanda. The 99% sinhalese army of Srilanka in 100% tamil areas has caused ethinic cleansing and genocide by the sinhalese srilankan government. For the last 50 years there has been violaence directed against the tamils by the sinhalese governemt sponsored serial "ethinic riots". It's chilling to watch this woman handing out cyanide... They're children! Children, for goodness' sake! Take a second to think of your own, if you have any, then think of your child with a gun in his hand, facing real bullets, wearing death around his neck!
Britain can do what she pleases with this child-killer. It wouldn't surprise me, what with Britain having sheltered Balasingham for years - why would his wife be kicked out? After all, she only handed out cyanide to Sri Lankan kids. She's all right.

It is deplorable that the British Government allows a senior member of a proscribed terrorist organization use its soil to organize riots against the lawfully elected Government of Sri Lanka. And thank God, there are women like AUNTY, who see beyond the disgusting propanganda that Srilanka has used. The freedom that women in the West enjoy today, the freedom of thought, action and will, is because of great women like Adele who were part of the changes that fought against oppression and discrimination. If anything, this Srilankan genocide has exposed, that the lines between evil, and what was thought to be evil, is thin. It has shown that to many people in the West, that the Tamils were living in a very Nazi-like country. That the failure of nonviolence movements for 30 years, repeated pogroms against Tamils, planned cultural genocide, failed promises and uncountable losses, led to the civil war of Srilanka/Eelam.

The UK is a state party to the Rome treaty of the international criminal court, which prohibits the recruitment of child soldiers. If this woman has played any role in the recruitment of combatants below the age of 15 after the UK ratified that treaty, then she can be arrested as a war criminal.
Even if she is not subject to the jurisdiction of the ICC, she is a malign influence in our society.
The Sri Lankan state has very likely committed war crimes against Tamil civilians, but 2 wrongs don't make a right.
Mrs Balasingham is an unwelcome guest in our country and the protests in Parliament Square have given the Tamil communmity a bad name.

1) How many civilians died in the final weeks of assault on the LTTE inside the ‘no fire’ zone and what has happened to their corpses?
2) Why were hospitals treating the injured and the sick inside the ‘no fire’ zone repeatedly shelled by the Sri Lankan army and what is the fate of the Tamil doctors who reported this to the global media?
3) What kind of banned weapons did the Sri Lankan forces use in their operations against the LTTE and which governments around the world supplied these to them?
4) Despite repeated official assertions that the ‘war is over’ why is the Sri Lankan government afraid of allowing independent media, humanitarian workers and human rights groups access to war affected areas?
5) Why are the thousands upon thousands of Tamil refugees – Sri Lankan citizens all of them- still being kept behind barbed wires like cattle corralled off before slaughter and why are Tamil youth being abducted from within these camps ?
6) Why are the repeated reports of Tamil women being raped by Sri Lankan army personnel not being investigated?
7) Why are Sri Lankan journalists questioning the conduct of the war being killed, tortured or forced into exile if the government has nothing to hide?
8) How can a chauvinist regime responsible for the worst kind of prejudice and atrocities against its minority population be entrusted with either their immediate rehabilitation

There seems to be a lot of commenters with decidedly English names who write with the same 'English as second language' style as many of the blatantly pro-LTTE supporters amongst the resident Tamils. I have no objection to people not having the same writing skills in English as myself, such as they are - I do object to people misrepresenting themselves while passing, by implication with their use of English names, as non-partisans.
A word to these people - it is human nature to distrust ANYTHING that is said by someone who is caught out in a lie. You do your 'cause' infinitely more harm than good with your deceit.

I remember a tv programme in the 1990's about that woman,I wondered what happenned to her. She is a disgrace to womanhood. She caused misery to so many Tamil children and parents, committing crimes against humanity, teaching children to fight and wear cyanide capsules round their necks. Why indeed? Particularly when the majority bypassed their ancestral homeland and a place where Tamil is spoken and they are the majority community - the Indian state of Tamil Nadu - which lies a few miles off the Sri Lankan coast and headed for the Western world (incl. Australia and NZ)instead.
I can think of some reasons:
- To better themselves
- They don't speak Tamil (true of some ex-Colombo folk)
- To escape the LTTE (now probably rather disappointed!)
- To escape the inherent 'racism' of the traditional Tamil caste system
- To further the Tamil Tiger war aims by effectively creating their own bloc vote (imported mandate); subvert politicians; influence media and foreign policy; gather intelligence; fundraising (legal and criminal); facilitate illegal migration (for the reasons previously given).
The first are economic migrants, the last are effectively enemy (unless we've declared war on Sri Lanka - that is apart from some newspapers)combatants.
The others I have some sympathy for - please don't class all Tamils as the same as the fanatic fringe. God knows they suffered enough because of them.

Approx 20,000 people were massacred in Vanni by the SL armed forces last month. Would the British Gov't arrest the SL High commissioner who is the representative of SL Gov't for these hideous crimes? Milliband was branded a white terrorist by the SL gov't for seeking a truce? Are we going to arrest him as well? Innocent People are being killed and detained in prisons indefinitely in Sri Lanka, on average 11 - 14 elderly people are dying everyday due to starvation, dehydration & phsycological trauma. Who is responsible for this? Would the British Gov't do anything about this? Leave the old lady alone for gods sake and pursue the real criminals!

I strongly believe this lady needs to be extradited to Sri Lanka to face war crimes. Innocent children in IDP camps are clearly giving evidence to the fact that Adele Balasingham, trained them and forcefully recruited them to LTTE. She is banned from entry to her own country, it is illegal for Australian nationals to wage war against a friendly country, I believe Australian Govt: has officially notified her. The Tamil Tigers and their supporters obscenely cling to the fiction that they are fighting for Tamils and not for themselves.
Yet they have repeatedly sabotaged attempts to resolve Tamil grievances in Sri Lanka - including by murdering the Tamil Sri Lankan Foreign Minister and former Oxford Student Union President Lakshman Kadirgamar, and former Harvard lecturer Dr Neelan Tiruchelvam.
They have also tried to trigger race riots in SL by attacks at the Scared Bo tree and the Temple of the Tooth - both religious and World Heritage sites.
The stories of children (some as young as 12)ripped from their families forcibly conscripted into the frontlines covered by some newspapers here are harrowing.
What is equally chilling is the number of refugee children, brought up in the supposedly democratic and multi-cultural West, who are demanding the creation of a one-party, mono-ethnic state - while routinely labelling anyone not sharing their world view as 'Sinhalese', 'in the pay of the SL Govt' or 'BNP'.
Make no mistake - Tamil Tigers / supporters have NO loyalty to Sri Lanka, Britain or even their own race. They are only interested in their own fanatical beliefs and aims.
And woe betide anyone or anything that gets in their way.

Now here is one woman who should be tried for war crimes and crimes against humanity, She trained the female wing of the LTTE terror group the Birds of Freedom. There is footage of her presenting cynaide capsules to the female fighters of the LTTE at their passing out parades. Her late husband was a key figure of the LTTE. It baffles me as to why teh Westminister Demonstrators do not ask for Adele to be tried as she should be held accountable for sending many thousands of young tamil women to their deaths as the trainer of the Birds of Freedom
