London teenager drowns in boating accident in Denmark

A volunteer youth worker has drowned after falling out of a rowing boat in Denmark.

Bradley Carty, 19, fell overboard off the coast at Aarhus.

His two friends, watching from the shore, could not save him after he was dragged under by strong currents.

Mr Carty's body was found by divers at the weekend close to where he had disappeared.

Today his mother Sharon Small, 48, from Clerkenwell, said she was "devastated". She told the Standard: "He was such a special and loving boy.

"He loved helping the elderly and his youth work, but his ambition was to be a music producer."

The former pupil at Highbury Grove School, who was studying at a community college in Kentish Town, had flown to Aarhus with two friends on Tuesday morning and was due to return that evening.

They found a rowing boat on the beach and Mr Carty got in to show his friends how to row, despite his only experience being a one-day canoeing course in Islington. Ms Small, who works at Sainsbury's in Angel, said: "They were just having fun. But the boat started drifting away from shore.

"Brad tried to row back but the current was too strong, then he panicked and stood up... and fell out.

"Then he went under the water and didn't come up."

MsSmall, Bradley's father David Carty, 46, sister Melissa, 22, and brother Nathan, 15, were being comforted by friends and family today.
