Downcast: Gordon Brown faces the prospect of senior ministers refusing to serve under him

Pound drops as plotters tell ministers: Finish Brown off

Joe Murphy, Political Editor
4 Jun 2009

Gordon Brown is tonight bunkered down at No 10 while Labour plotters beg the Cabinet to oust him.

With the Prime Minister determined to tough out the biggest crisis of his career, ringleaders of the plot to topple him admitted they cannot succeed without a full-scale Cabinet mutiny.

Amid rumours that a Cabinet minister will speak out after 10pm tonight when the polling stations close — and claims that more ministers are ready to resign — the pound tanked on claims sweeping the City that he was about to quit.

Sterling dropped from its daily high of $1.6433 to $1.6089 in a matter of minutes as panic gripped dealing rooms, before recovering slightly to $1.6166.

But there was no hard evidence of ministerial intervention. And one key rebel admitted the bid to oust Mr Brown will fail unless Cabinet ministers deal a killer blow. The MP, who claimed plotters would easily get 75 names on an open letter calling on the Prime Minister to quit, said: “To be honest, we are just a peasants' revolt. We can burn haystacks and destroy crops but we cannot deliver the coup de grâce. For that to happen we need Cabinet members to earn their salaries and have the cojones to do the job.”

The burning question was whether senior ministers known to be dismayed with Mr Brown would go for him. Privately, some said a bad enough disaster in today's local and European elections could trigger moves.

The Prime Minister, who was visited by Sir Alan Sugar, whose catchphrase is “you're fired”, was phoning key colleagues to guarantee their support.

He was said to be offering jobs in a sweeping reshuffle that could be brought forward to tomorrow — a move that would bind ministers into his camp before European election results are announced on Sunday.

Mr Brown cast a postal vote before the polling stations opened and was expected to remain dug in at No 10 all day, planning his moves and rebuilding alliances. The election results, however, could torpedo the fightback.

Voters nationwide will choose Euro-MPs while key barometer regions are holding council elections, the biggest test of public opinion before the next general election.

Labour was braced for a rout in county halls, whose results will be out tomorrow. MPs also fear being pushed into a humiliating fourth place in the European elections.

The battle for Downing Street entered a lull as voting got under way. But Mr Brown was braced for more ministerial resignations tomorrow. There is speculation some ministers will refuse to serve, which would make his position untenable, while others are refusing to be moved from their departments.

Alistair Darling is digging in his heels at the Treasury, although a friend said: “He understands these things are the prerogative of the Prime Minister.”

And David Miliband is determined to stay at the Foreign Office. Their stances make it difficult for Mr Brown to promote his protégé Ed Balls to Chancellor without a serious backlash.

There was anger from Labour MPs at what they saw as a ham-fisted attempt by Chief Whip Nick Brown to isolate critics. He named five MPs as ringleaders of the bid to topple Mr Brown with a “go now” letter.

Two of them, Stephen Byers and Alan Milburn, were abroad. Another, Paul Farrelly, furiously hit back at what he called “black propaganda”.

He said: “What the Chief Whip, Nick Brown, has been saying is completely untrue. It's an unacceptable style of government. For what he has done he should really consider his position.”

Mr Darling was forced to deny he was the author of an email sent to Labour MPs overnight claiming he had signed a letter calling on the Prime Minister to quit. His spokesman said: “He has not signed it nor will he.”

He has to go. He is nothing short of a liability. As Chancellor, he ruined the country - think only of what he did to pension funds - which has left many millions of people without adequate pensions - but he's arrogant enough to want to stay on given the years he was left waiting for Blair to go(so what did Blair see that we didn't??) What the UK needs is an early election (which Brown won't provide) and a chance to elect a responsible government.

I love people who are saying that Brown is the only one who could have guided us through this recession, do you ever think they ask exactly why Britain was the worst hit country in Europe or how he's trying to get us out of it? We were the worst hit due to him removing all financial regulation and spending copious amounts of money on non jobs in the big Labour voting areas. He's trying to buy us out of a recession, any halfway decent economist will tell you that this can only be done if you have large cash reserves which you have accrued during the boom years, which of course we haven't because Gordo spent them all creating jobs for the boys in the civil service.
Admittedly, none of the other main parties are any cop either which is why I shall be voting for none of them until they start showing a bit of backbone and working for the public and not themselves.

They put out feelers, they leak messages, the consult focus groups but they couldn't take a decision to save their lives.

Most people are as sceptical of the press as they are of politicians. The people are drawing their own conclusions regarding the dreadful state of our nation. We can see what is going on around us, and we can see the hardships caused by the on-going redundancies and job shedding.

No amount of spin will save Gordy and no amount of spin will see this disastrous, crumbling government in control for a fourth term. It’s torture watching them string out the situation for as long as they can.

Statistically the biggest fear has been the switch by traditional Labour voters to parties such as the BNP, as shown in Burnley and Barking & Dagenham.

To try and link dissatisfaction with a leader, every bit as autocratic as his predecessor, with people's democratic right to vote whichever way they please, is frankly risable scaremongering, and typical of the infra dig with which Brown and his supporters treat ddemocracy and those who exercise it.

The only way to deal with the extremist parties, is for MPs to take them head on by putting their constituents first, before their money grubbing expenses

That they don't is why traditional socialists are turning the other way completely, and it ain't Cameron

Brown is not a charismatic showbiz rep but he is a solid, thoughtful intellectual who has managed to shield the UK from the worst of the worldwide economic storm, despite being surrounded by people who think "expenses" is a synonym for "pay rise". He has done a good job but the people of Britain seem to prefer dazzling white smiles and soundbites to a a man the rest of the world has acclaimed as a financial wizard. I'd say Brown's cabinet colleagues lack the courage of leaders.

Were just one brave enough to call for his resignation, for the sake of the Labour Party and indeed for parliamentary democracy, because it is the latter which is being abused as MPs and Ministers stand down one by one, then Labour might have a chance of salvaging something at the next election.

As it is, Labour under Brown are heading for a landslide defeat to David Cameron, which Cameron has not earned given the featherweight opposition to the Government on issues such as Iraq and the Royal Mail and the lack of any coherent policy alternatives.

Cameron therefore must be dreading the prospect of Brown sstepping down either side of the weekend, as the thought of a new leader means he might have to do some work and earn an election victory after all

I fully support Gordon Brown and I think the media has far too much influence in getting public opinion to go against the government. The resignations of Blears and Smith are far from blows...they will restore confidence that Labour is ousting those that are not fit for public office.

Brown is doing a great job in adverse circumstances (made the more adverse by the press). Who else could run the country during this time of crisis (brought on by greedy bankers, rather than politicians)? Who else could remain committed to clear policy implementation in the midst of press hostility? Cameron is not a credible alternative. Clegg is preferable to Cameron, which is damnation by faint praise. Boris is the only hope for the Tory party, but that would be London's loss.

At a time of great calamity for our nation, the only sensible thing to do is to rally support behind our Prime Minister and to respect him for his continuing commitment to getting us through this mess. With no credible alternatives, the extreme Right (fascists) are the only prospective winners. The Press should start to take a more responsible role and quit the manipulation of public opinion by reporting the news fairly and given a balanced commentary on how the economy and the politics of this country are progressing.

Brown’s handling of the economy through the banking crisis and subsequent downturn, some of the harshest we have seen, has been proportionate and decisive, better than any other world leader. As a result the UK was one of the last to enter recession and, despite what doomsay’s will say, we will be one of the first countries to recover. When all said and done, I wouldn’t have trusted any other politician to handle the situation better, particularly someone unproven such as Cameron. My concern is that some people, who lack the ability to see the bigger picture will, on a knee jerk reaction, vote for one of the joke parties such as UKIP or the vile BNP to punish Brown, that, I feel would be a massive mistake.
