Street markets redeveloped to lure shoppers

Three street markets will be expanded and given facelifts under plans to tap into an increase in demand.

Church Street Market in Marylebone will have a £3.5million overhaul, £1.5million will be spent on Tachbrook Street Market in Pimlico and the capacity at Shepherd's Bush Market will be increased.

Hammersmith and Fulham council intends to build an extension to Shepherd's Bush Market in Pennard Road, to the east of the site, and a third entrance in Goldhawk Road.

Councillor Mark Loveday said: "Shepherd's Bush Market has been the heart of the area for nearly 100 years and we want to make sure it stays that way. We want to encourage any scheme that opens up the market, with the possibility of new shops and leisure facilities."

Westminster council will connect mains power and water supplies to Church Street Market, established in 1830, to encourage extra traders.

Footways will be repaved and roads raised to improve access. Similar measures will be put in place in Pimlico, with trees and seating added.

Somebody please tell Waltham Forest: we have had the longest market in London, but Council ineptitude and idleness are killing it. Instead of cherishing it they try to attract shops like Matalan, who flog cheap clothes, to open next to long-established stallholders trying to do just that. The prime development site in the Borough adjacent to the market has been a demolition site for years.
