A directory service that claims to connect customers to any mobile phone in Britain has provoked a backlash over issues of privacy.
The database, which begins operation next week, will charge £1 to connect users to any of the country's 42million mobile phones.
Users will ask to be put through to a person's mobile phone and the operator will ring the number and ask for permission to connect the call.
But the directory, which has been developed using information bought from market research companies, is causing a row about security and children's safety.
The firm behind the service, Connectivity, claims numbers of those under 18 will not be available. The service will be at 118800.co.uk from 18 June.

UK prices have not been set but are expected to be about £340 for pay-as-you-go.
