Primeval is history, says ITV as it ditches sci-fi drama

ITV confirmed today that it is not making another series of cult science fiction drama Primeval.

A spokesman for the channel said post-watershed programming was its priority.

The programme starred Ben Miller, Douglas Henshall, Andrew-Lee Potts and former S Club 7 singer Hannah Spearritt.

It followed a group of scientists studying prehistoric and fantasy creatures.

The third series launched in April with 5.3 million viewers and scored an average audience of 4.41 million until it finished last weekend.

An ITV spokesman said of the channel's decision not to commission a fourth series: "After three very successful series of Primeval, there are no plans at the present time for it to return to ITV. High quality drama remains a key part of the ITV schedule although our current focus is on post-watershed productions."

The programme used computer-generated imagery (CGI) effects to render the creatures, and was created by Impossible Pictures, the team behind the BBC's Walking With Dinosaurs.

I thought it was rubbish, but then I wasn't the intended audience, it filled that early evening slot for kids on a Saturday night and was put up in direct competition with Dr Who, which put it at a major disadvantage. It's a shame really as it was actually original, not reality TV, a soap or any of the other dross that ITV seems to thrive on churning out and most kids although preferring Dr Who would still watch it. Mind you, how many people remember Manimal, Automan, Streethawk, etc? They were pure dross but as kids we still watched them.

I have to say I'm not that upset about this. The first series was very good but the show went rapidly downhill.

The glaring problem with the script was that a group of supposedly intelligent people with access to immense resources (i.e. goverment backed) and who were regularly fighting monsters kept running round in t-shirts will tranquiliser guns. Seriously anyone with half a brain would be in body armor and carrying an elephant gun.
