Top London hairdresser threw himself to his death

Celebrity hairdressser Mark Cowperthwaite jumped to his death in a hospital atrium after being tormented by years of depression, an inquest heard today.

Mr Cowperthwaite, 46, had styled the hair of pop stars and Hollywood actresses such as Kate Bush, Julianne Moore and Julie Christie.

In October last year he leaped from a walkway in Guy's Hospital in Southwark and plunged five storeys to his death in front of horrified staff and patients.

Speaking outside Southwark coroner's court, where a verdict of suicide was recorded, his best friend and former colleague Charoulla Theocharous said: "Actresses used to fly in from all over the world. Mark was such a talented hairdresser. He was the best in London."

Miss Theocharous had told the inquest that her friend had suffered from depression for many years and had made several previous suicide attempts.
