They are environmentally friendly, cheap and even come with a designer label. Just don't jump in puddles.
The latest innovation in the world of children's fashion is clothing made entirely from newspaper.
A range of T-shirts, scarves and jewellery made from woven newsprint and magazines is to be unveiled at Croydon Fashion Festival.
The town is trying to take on London, Paris and New York next week with shows highlighting the green alternative to haute couture.
There are dresses made from Aldi plastic bags, classes on how to re-invent your wardrobe by adding buttons and vintage lace, and skirts made from old trousers and organic fabric.
Susan Beresford, who is co-ordinating the free Wear, Not Waste catwalk show in the Whitgift shopping centre, said: “This aim of this show is to highlight the fact that we waste too much but it will also give people practical solutions to create environmentally friendly garments.”
Croydon artist and designer Soraia Waterhouse, 38, developed the idea of a range of children's wear made out of newspapers and magazines after helping her daughter Rachel, eight, with a school project on rainforests.
She said: “I suppose my designs are more of a statement than something to wear every day.”
Organisers of the festival, which runs from June 20 to 28 and features 15 designers, will also run a sewing masterclass in Croydon Town Hall and want people to bring along old clothes.
Mrs Beresford said: “We want Croydon to be on the map as the green fashion capital of the world.
“All the designers involved are part of an artistic movement from waste management.

I think it's great that Croydon Fashion Festival are thinking green in these tough financial times.
I've got loads of old clothes that could be re-used, and this kind of thing might just give me the inspiration I need.
