Capital’s young musicians get chance to woo Tube crowds

Louise Jury, Chief Arts Correspondent

Young musicians are being offered the opportunity to busk at prime spots in Underground stations next month.

A competition, part of a two-day music festival, will see 100 emerging musicians aged 16 to 25 chosen by the public for the spots at stations including Bank, Westminster and Waterloo.

They will also have the chance to win prizes including a guitar signed and donated by Sting.

The scheme is part of the Mayor's Rhythm of London festival on Friday 10 and Saturday 11 July. The event will include classes with professional musicians, children's workshops in unusual instruments and, in Canada Square Park, a display of stringed instruments from around the world.

Schools will take part in a day of music-making across the city, and emerging bands will appear at locations including Spires shopping centre, High Barnet and Greenwich Park. Boris Johnson said: “This busking scheme is a brilliant opportunity for young Londoners. It means they get to perform live in front of a crowd.”
