Heart disease link to infertile daughters

Sophie Goodchild, Health Editor
30.06.09

Heart disease in men doubles the risk of infertility in their daughters.

Findings published today reveal a link between women developing polycystic ovarian syndrome and cardiac problems in their fathers.

The syndrome affects the ovaries and is a leading cause of infertility - Victoria Beckham and Jools Oliver are sufferers.

The odds of girls developing the condition treble if their father is a high stroke risk, the study shows.

Researchers at the University of Adelaide in Australia believe the genes of men with chronic diseases create unfavourable conditions in the womb, including restricted fetal growth which is a factor in women developing polycystic ovarian syndrome.
