Brown ‘has given up on by-election’

Gordon Brown was accused of “writing off” the Norwich North by-election today as it emerged that yet another Labour MP was quitting in the wake of the expenses scandal.

The poll, triggered by the resignation of Left-winger Ian Gibson over expenses, was today set for 23 July. But with predictions of a stay-at-home protest by Labour voters, the Tories said it appeared the Prime Minister had given up on it and wanted to get a defeat out of the way.

By contrast, it emerged today that the Glasgow North East by-election, which Labour has a better chance of winning, will be delayed until November.

MP for Leyton and Wanstead Harry Cohen is stepping down at the next election. He had nominated his Colchester property as his “main home” and claimed about £100,000 for a second in his constituency.
