Leicester Square
Centrepiece of the revamp is a new 200-metre "ribbon" of white granite to provide more seating, landscaped gardens and an Olympics-themed rolling arts programme. Work is due to begin in April 2011. Cost: £18 million
Portman Square
Restoration of one of London's finest Georgian squares, with new seating, cycle hire and art. Cost: £3.5 million
Theatreland
Scheme to improve public squares including St Martin's Court, the south of Wellington Street and Cambridge Circus. The council hopes to widen footpaths, improving pedestrian links between Leicester Square and Covent Garden. Cost: £2.4 million
Aldwych
Programme to improve the road for pedestrians and cyclists by widening pavements and improving cycle hire facilities. A pedestrian crossing will be put in the Strand near Lancaster Place. The crossing is due to be in place by the autumn in time for London Fashion Week, which will draw thousands of visitors to Somerset House. Cost: £2.5 million
St Martin's Lane
Improvements including the widening of pavements. Cost: £2 million
West End
Extension of the Legible London scheme to help pedestrians navigate the city's streets on foot with better signage across swathes of the West End. Cost: £2.7 million

What a missed opportunity - these proposals do not far far enough. Westminster should pedestrianise as much space as possible around Leicester Sq + Covent Gardens. The environment in Central London is becoming a really stressful place - nowhere peaceful to relax away from all the traffic.
