UK 'has worst violent crime rate in Europe'

02.07.09

Britain has a higher violent crime rate than the US and any country in Europe, according to the Conservative Party.

Analysis carried out by the Tories on crime figures released by the European Commission also revealed that Britain has the second overall crime rate after Sweden.

The country's murder rate of 1.49 for every 100,000 people ranks it in 13th place, higher than France, Spain and Italy.

Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia have the highest homicide rates in the European Union.

Shadow home secretary Chris Grayling said: "This is a real damning indictment of this Government's comprehensive failure over more than a decade to tackle the deep-rooted social problems in our society, and the knock-on effect on crime and anti-social behaviour."

All rankings were based on the number of crimes committed per 100,000 people, calculated on a three-year average from 2005 to 2007.

Britain had the fifth highest robbery rate in the European Union after Belgium, Spain, France and Portugal, with 164 robberies committed per 100,000 people.

Figures on burglary place the country in fourth, behind Belgium, Denmark and the Netherlands, but with 304,881 burglaries committed overall, Britain recorded by far the highest number in 2007.

Mr Grayling said: "We're now on our fourth home secretary in this parliament, and all we are getting is a rehash of old initiatives that didn't work the first time round. More than ever, Britain needs a change of direction."

Here in Canada "Gun Control" is the "Criminals Best Friend". Unlike the UK we can possess handguns and long guns with the proper permits etc. Our weapons by law must be locked away in a vault complete with trigger locks attached in other words useless in the event of a home invasion. The criminal can use lethal force upon his or her victims but the victims are prohibited from doing the same. If the victim or victims of this heinous crime used lethal force a prison sentence of up to 25 years would be automatically imposed. If you maimed the intruder you would be sued by the criminal for using excessive force or more force than necessary to subdue him or her. I like the saying by one of your respondents "the government criminalises the trivial and trivialises the criminal". That's awesome. Dave in Canada.

I thought this article was about England, why do the complains sound so South African? Everything from gun ownership to crime friendly laws sound familiar. Many people here complain of crime and threaten us with emigration to England. It seems like crime is everywhere.

Its the moral examples that Blair showed us (If you don't like someone or can't force people to do what you want, then kill them)

- Michael, london uk

Britain is still top dog on some things eh !!!

- Trevor, Tunbridge Wells

My sister was murdered in London six years ago and they have yet to catch the killer. We were told they are "working on it." However, whenever we try to contact the police we are treated as if we should have no interest. At first we thought we were dealing with good old-fashioned european anti-Americanism, but now I realize that brits treat each other in the same subhuman way. No wonder their crime rate is so high. It's a scary place. Hollywood does poor justice to the US in portraying the US as dangerous when in comparison to the UK and even Sweden we're safer.

Crash Gordon's Nu Labor socialist experiment is clearly failing once again...

- Georgie, Islington, London

This increasing crime trend can be traced back to the UK's outlawing of both self defense against criminals and the prohibition of law-abiding private ownership of firearms.

Google and read the study by well respected criminologists Kates and Mauser:

WOULD BANNING FIREARMS REDUCE
MURDER AND SUICIDE?
A REVIEW OF INTERNATIONAL AND
SOME DOMESTIC EVIDENCE
DON B. KATES* AND GARY MAUSER**

pg 8:
"To gun control advocates, England, the cradle
of our liberties, was a nation made so peaceful by strict gun control that its police did not even need to carry guns. The United States, it was argued, could attain such a desirable situation by radically reducing gun ownership, preferably by banning and confiscating handguns. The results discussed earlier contradict those expectations. On the one hand, despite constant and substantially increasing gun ownership, the United States saw progressive and dramatic reductions
in criminal violence in the 1990s. On the other hand, the
same time period in the United Kingdom saw a constant and
dramatic increase in violent crime to which Englandfs response was ever]more drastic gun control including, eventually, banning and confiscating all handguns and many types of long guns.22
Nevertheless, criminal violence rampantly increased so that by 2000 England surpassed the United States to become one of the developed worldfs most violence]ridden nations."

Who said "tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime"? What a legacy he's left us.

- Roger, Winchester, England

Brown has not got time to address England's problems since he is preoccupied with bleeding the country dry till he's thrown out for good. What successes has Labour actually had? Name one!!!!!!!

- Tom, Manchester

Its hardly a surprise when the punishments are so stupidly and disgustingly lenient.

This country desperately needs the tough zero tolerance approach of Singapore. Over there its so much safer and cleaner because the punishments are so tough unlike the stupid flimsy justice system over here which is the criminals best friend.

- Vivek, London

Of course we do, all of Europes criminal elements are over here because we've opened our borders to rich pickings.

- Bob, Cheam

HUMBUG! More abject spin and waffle. That report is grossly incorrect.

THE UK IS THE MOST DANGEROUS PLACE TO LIVE ON THE PLANET.

THE POLICE DO NOT CARE LESS.

GORMLESS BROWN COULD NOT CARE LESS - AS LONG AS HE HAS NINE PERSONAL BODYGUARDS.

IT IS NOT SAFE TO WALK THE STREETS IN BROAD DAYLIGHT - AS WITNESSED BY THE 82-YEAR-OLD LADY BEEN REPEATEDLY STABBED RECENTLY.

THE UK IS A DISASTER.

AMEN.

- Reuben Camara, Republic of Morecambe, UK

Good to see we top the league in something. This is what happens when Labour pander to the lower classes.

- Albert Swift, Aberdeen, Scotland

This is not news, it is opinion. The project set out to make Britain look like the most crime-ridden place in Europe - and even then we've only come second. You know you can't trust a report when it makes out that Sweden is the most violent place in the entire continent! What a joke.

- Charlie, Soho, London

Cobblers! Here in France if you call the police they pitch up 10mins later: if they've got a higher robbery rate it must be because they actually investigate when there's a robbery, whereas in the UK I have personally been told by the police that it is they do not to attend to burglar alarms, they let neighbours deal with it.

This analysis is with figures that were already 'massaged' by the Labour Government, which has had some crimes reclassified (possession of canabis, for example) and vast numbers of crimes just put in the 'to do' basket by the Police. I bet the real picture is much worse.

- Roz, France

Steve hits the nail on the jolly old head. This is bound to be the case when the world's detritus washes up on our shores along with their various nefarious activities and finds not only a safe haven for their crimes but free health care and a nice council house supplied.

- Squiz, Islington

The results of the political correct labour government social engineering projects and ideaology.
Evan the Tories are closely matched on this too.

- Joe, Swanley Kent

POLICE ARE TOO BUSY CATCHING MOTORISTS.

I APPROACED A ROUNDABOUT WHEN THREE UNMARKED POLICE CARS SREAMED ROUND. THEN A POLICE CAR APPROACHED AT SPEED BEHIND ME AS , THE LIGHTS CHANGED. AS NO OTHER CAR ON ROUNDABOUT I PULLED ON TO NEXT SET OF LIGHTS TO LET HIM THROUGH. HE FOLLOWED TO GIVE ME THREE PENALTY POINTS AND SIXTY POUNDS FINE.

TO ADD INSULT TO INJURY I DID NOT GET MY LISCENCE BACK FOR FOUR MONTHS. ONLY BE TOLD THE OFFICER DID NOT FILE HIS PAPERS. UPON MY QUERY HAD I BEEN CHARGED, I WAS TOLD IT DID NOT MATTER AS I HAD ALREADY PLEADED GUILTY AND PAID THE FINE.

YET SOME YEARS AGO, WHEN I CALLED ON BEHALF OF A NEIGHBOUR WHO FOUND HER FRONT DOOR LOCKED FROM THE INSIDE BY BURGULARS, THE POLICE TOOK TWO HOURS TO ARRIVE. BUT THAT IS NOT AS BAD AS AN AGED FRIEND WHO CALLED ABOUT YOUTHS THROWING EGGS AT HIS FRONT DOOR WITH THE POLICE ARRIVING NEXT DAY.

- Alan Green, Woodford Green

Probably because the most violent criminals in Europe now live here.

- Steve, London

This can't posibly be true, can it? I mean, Jackie and everyone before and after her have constantly told us crime is falling, we do not live in a dangerous society. Or is this the same spin as Gordhelpus's increased growth at 0%; no cuts, well maybe small ones; ID cards are voluntary until we say differently; we won't sell the post office, not yet anyway. So much for the comment 'we will do what it takes', 'make hard decissions',er no we won't, if it means Gordhelpus can't cling to power we'll back down to appease our MP's so that they can get paid the ususl pay and perks for another year!!!!!

- Alan, carlisle uk

Labour say "Tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime."
They should say "Labour criminalises the trivial and trivialises the criminal."
