Ten held over shop shooting death

05.07.09

Ten people are being questioned over the fatal shooting of a man in a shop, police said.

The 27-year-old was found with gun shot wounds at Brookhouse Wines in Salford, Manchester. Police were called at 9pm on Saturday after reports of a man with a gun.

The man was taken to hospital but died a short time later.

Police said 10 people were arrested and remain in custody for questioning.

The man worked in the convenience store, according to neighbours, who said his name was Max.

One resident, who did not wish to be named, said: "My wife used to work there with him. He was a good Muslim, he led a straight life and kept himself healthy.

"He was very friendly and gave out sweets to local children. It is very sad."

Another neighbour said she heard the gunshot followed by sirens 15 minutes later.

"I spoke to someone who was in there at the time. They just walked in and shot him. He dipped down under the counter but he didn't have a chance," she said.

There is a CCTV camera outside the shop but residents said the equipment did not work.
