TfL calls for two new bridges

Katharine Barney, City Hall Reporter
10.07.09

Two new bridges and more ferries across the Thames are needed to ease congestion in the east of the capital, a new report states.

The Transport for London study commissioned by Mayor Boris Johnson recommends a pedestrian and cycle bridge between North Greenwich and Canary Wharf, a tunnel or bridge at Silvertown and improved passenger ferries.

The East London River Crossings Review took into account changes in the area since Canary Wharf, Excel and the 02 were built.

It also calls for better cycling and pedestrian access, a vehicle ferry at Gallions Reach and an upgrade of the Woolwich Ferry. Mr Johnson said he would "dig deeper" into the "sensible" recommendations.

I must have been punch drunk, when typing my comment!!

It should have read,
Frank -maybe you have forgotten to read the first comment. Boris has just cancelled two very important transport systems that would have greatly helped the people of London, The Thames Gatway Bridge,as well as the Waterfront Transit Scheme, is this what you call caring?, get real.

Must make mental note to always read back comments before posting!!

Do they have any bright ides to rectify the odd fact that it's easier to cross the Thames than the Lea?

Is this the same 'caring' Boris that cancelled the East London Thames Gateway Bridge project a mere nine months ago? Keep up the good work indeed!

How about some genuine and properly constructed cycle routes in London. The current ones are a total mess and nothing more than a bad joke, starting randomly and stopping when the planner clearly cannot be bothered to solve the problem. Try cycling around the Elephant and Castle, for instance, or cycling the main route from Shoreditch to Holborn, which is usedby hundreds of cyclists every day. This makes cycling an extremely dangerous form of transport, although it is actually the only reliable one due to tube breakdowns and traffic congestion. If Boris were really interested, he would appoint a Cycling Tsar to REALLY get cycling properly facilitated in London.

Totally agree with the other Frank, and a long overdue proposal, perhaps TFL finally realising what it's job should be, ie, opening routes not closing them.

The Silvertown suggestion is essential, the Blackwall Tunnel is not really adequate and the Woolwich Ferry is all too often operating with just one boat, There are supposed to be three boats, two in operation with one spare.

There are 2 conflicting articles on these pages. One is the call to cut London transport investment, the other, this one, is actually showing proactive innovation where it is so badly needed. The state of public transport in London effects the WHOLE country and should be number one priority. The cost of travelling by Tube is already too expensive, so in reality the government NEEDS TO STUMP UP CASH, and quick!

This is an excellent idea and really shows Boris cares about all Londoners, not just zone 1 like Ken did. Keep up the good work!
