New CCTV clue in search for missing London backpacker

This CCTV image is believed to be the last picture of a British backpacker who went missing a week ago visiting Blue Mountains National Park near Sydney.

The picture, far right, shows 19-year-old Jamie Neale at the youth hostel where he was staying in Katoomba, New South Wales, last Thursday. He was last seen at about 9.40am the next day.

Blue Mountains police hope the release of the image today will help lead to his whereabouts. Jamie is believed to be lost in the bushland, possibly while hiking to a landmark known as the Ruined Castle.

His father Richard flew from the family's north London home yesterday to help police with their search. The officers were today were trying to track down Canadian backpacker Matthew Cayes, seen on CCTV talking Jamie the day he vanished. Mr Cayes is now in Thailand and may be the only person able to tell police where the Jamie was planning to go.

Jamie was wearing light clothing and was ill-equipped for survival in the bush during the Australian winter. His mobile phone and documents were found at the hostel.
