Toy shop sorry over computer porn

10 Jul 2009

Retail giant Toys R Us has apologised to a mother and her eight-year-old daughter after they came across pornographic images on a computer in one of its stores.

The company said it appeared someone had overridden the protection software and accessed an inappropriate website before Tracey Aisbett and her daughter Harriet began looking at the laptop.

Now Toys R Us has launched an investigation to try to work out exactly how this "extremely rare" event happened at their store in Wakefield, West Yorkshire.

Mrs Aisbett, 40, told the Wakefield Express: "I am not a prude but I could not believe what I saw right in front of me in a children's toy shop.

"She just touched the buttons and the screen sprang to life. There was no mistaking what I saw."

Toys R Us has written to apologise to Mrs Aisbett, who lives in Wakefield.

A spokesman for the firm said: "Clearly we take this issue very seriously and we are carrying out an investigation.

"We have sold thousands of computers over the past 14 years and incidents of this nature are extremely rare. All our computers and laptops have protective software installed on them, which is designed to prevent inappropriate material being accessed.

"This software is tested on a weekly basis. Unfortunately, with all software, there are ways it can be overridden and in this case it looks like someone has done so and then accessed an inappropriate site."

The spokesman said the firm's investigation will include looking at what was captured on the store's CCTV cameras. He added: "We would like to apologise for any distress experienced."
