The world's best cocktail makers were today gathering in London to fight for the title of bartender of the year.

The three-day contest, known as the "liquid Oscars", will see 18 "mixologists" from around the world competing in London's most exclusive bars.

Organised by drinks brand Diageo, the contest has already whittled down competitors from 6,000 applicants.

"There is a huge cocktail scene in London and we wanted to take advantage of that to see who the world's best bartender really is," said Louise McGuane from Diageo.

Competitors are judged on their selection of cocktails, flair, and how they match food with drinks. Venues include the East Rooms and Lounge Lover in Shoreditch, and Whole Foods supermarket in Kensington where competitors will use fresh produce.

Are the guys from the Opera Quarter Bar (OQB - Covent Garden) competing this year? That's Douglas Ankrah's place isn't it? He invented the "Porn Star Martini" didn't he?
