Tory rebels over new Europe party
15 Jul 2009David Cameron was hit by in-fighting in his new European Right-wing grouping today.
He suspended the Tory whip from MEP Edward McMillan-Scott, who defied him by standing to be vice-president of the European Parliament.
Mr McMillan-Scott, an MEP since 1984, won as an independent, defeating a Polish ally who Mr Cameron's MEPs were backing in a deal to launch the European Conservatives and Reformists group.
The Polish MEP, Michael Kaminski, is now the grouping's leader after Tory leader in Europe Timothy Kirkhope stood aside. Mr McMillan-Scott said that he should be allowed back into the fold.
