A woman whose childhood was blighted by emotional and sexual abuse at the hands of her mother today won a £60,000 damages payout after a judge ruled Camden council did not do enough to protect her.
Despite constant hospital admissions with injuries inflicted by her mother, and having spent almost all her life on the child protection register, the girl was 14 before she was finally taken into care, the High Court heard.
In a damning decision, Mrs Justice Swift said that had the girl been monitored by social workers as she should have been, the mother's unsuitability as a parent would have been revealed far earlier and the daughter saved from life-shattering emotional damage.
Camden removed the girl from her family's care only when the mother herself walked into a police station in 1989, saying she could no longer cope.
