Wine could be produced by a London vineyard under plans backed by Boris Johnson.
The Forty Hall Vineyard in Enfield will become one of the first to operate commercially in the capital since medieval times.
Volunteer posts at the 15-acre site could be offered to young offenders and people with mental health problems to help them reintegrate into society.
Manager Sarah Vaughan-Roberts has signed up to the Mayor's Capital Growth project which aims to create 2,012 food-growing spaces by 2012. Members can apply for grants, share advice and equipment and ask for volunteers.
The land was donated by the nearby Capel Manor College which also sponsored the first acre of pinot and chardonnay grapes. Ms Vaughan-Roberts is seeking sponsors for the remaining land, which costs £10,000 an acre to plant. She said: "With the climate getting warmer there is no reason to rely on foreign wine."
Mr Johnson said: "I think it's a wonderful thing."
