Swine flu Q&A

Anna Davis, Health Reporter
20.07.09

What are the symptoms?
Patients will experience a sudden onset of chills or fever. They will have a temperature of 38C or more. They could also experience headaches, muscle pains, a cough, sore throat, vomiting and diarrhoea.

What does Tamiflu do?It reduces the duration of the illness by blocking enzymes on the surface of the virus. It is important to take it quickly after the onset of symptoms.

What can I do to stop infection?Avoid people with obvious symptoms. Wash your hands with soap and water regularly and cover your mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing.

What are the threats to pregnant women and small children? Those with the highest rate of flu-like illness earlier this month were aged one to 14. Babies and children under five are at high risk because their immune systems are not strong. During pregnancy the immune system is naturally suppressed.

What is the advice to pregnant women? The National Childbirth Trust said the risks are so great women should think about delaying pregnancy. The Royal College of Midwives said expectant mothers should avoid crowded places. The Department of Health said they should avoid unnecessary travel.

How serious is the threat? The Government is working on a worst-case scenario of 65,000 deaths. But some health experts have said the toll could be as low as 6,000 - the same number that die in a normal seasonal flu every year.
